Synopsis

A319 ENG FAILED DURING TAXI OUT.

Narrative

WE WERE PARKED IN THE BLOCK OF 19 WAITING FOR THE WT AND BAL AND WE NOTICED A MODERATE VIBRATION FROM AN UNSPECIFIC LOCATION LASTING APPROX 10 SECONDS. THE INITIAL VIBRATION WAS FOLLOWED BY A SECOND; SHORTER; LOWER INTENSITY VIBRATION A SHORT TIME LATER. I NOTICED A SLIGHT VARIATION IN THE #1 ENG INDICATIONS OF ABOUT 0.3% N1 AND 100 LBS PER HR FUEL FLOW DURING THE FIRST VIBRATION; BUT NOT DURING THE SECOND. THE LEAD FLT ATTENDANT CALLED US AND INQUIRED ABOUT THE VIBRATION AND SAID THAT THEY THOUGHT IT EMANATED FROM BENEATH THE CTR OF THE CABIN. I RAN THE ENGS UP TO APPROX 40% N1 AND ALL INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL WITH NO VIBRATIONS. FO AND I ELIMINATED EXTERNAL CAUSES AS THE POSSIBILITY FOR THE VIBRATION. I THEN CALLED THE TECH CTR FOR ADVICE AND WE ALL DECIDED THAT WE SHOULD GO BACK TO THE GATE FOR FURTHER INSPECTION. SHORTLY AFTER ADVANCING THE THRUST LEVERS TO TAXI TO A GATE; THE VIBRATION STARTED UP AGAIN. FO RPTED THAT THE EGT WAS RISING HIGHER IN ENG #1 THAN ENG #2. THE EGT WAS APCHING 600 DEGS C AND WE JUST STARTED DISCUSSING SHUTTING DOWN THE ENG WHEN THE ENG FAILED. VERY SHORTLY AFTER THAT WE ARRIVED AT THE GATE. WE SUBSEQUENTLY FOUND OUT THAT THE N2 WAS FROZEN.
