A 121 CARRIER MAINT INSPECTOR'S REPORT ABOUT THEIR NON- DESTRUCTIVE TEST MANUAL (NDT) HAVING MANY SERIOUS MISTAKES DUE TO SCANNING OF THE MANUAL; CAUSING NUMEROUS ERRORS IN PROCEDURES; SETTINGS AND CALIBRATIONS OF EQUIPMENT.

Narrative

OUR NDT PROCS MANUAL HAS MANY SERIOUS MISTAKES DUE TO SCANNING OF THE MANUAL. CURRENT MANUAL IS INACCURATE AND UNRELIABLE. NDT INSPECTORS; AS PART OF THEIR DUTIES; ARE REQUIRED TO PERFORM SHIFT; DAILY; WKLY AND OTHER CHKS USING INCORRECT INFO WHICH COULD CAUSE INJURY; DAMAGE TO EQUIP OR FAILURE TO DETECT FLAWS IN ENG PARTS. INSPECTORS WERE NEVER TOLD IN ADVANCE OF THE PROB; BUT DISCOVERED THE PROB WHEN DOWNLOADING AND PRINTING THE NECESSARY PROCS AND FORMS. NO ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN BY MGMNT. WE REQUEST THAT UNTIL THE ISSUE IS RESOLVED; THE CHIEF INSPECTOR ISSUE A SIGNED LETTER ALLOWING US TO USE EITHER THE LATEST INCORRECT PROCS AND FORMS; OR ALLOW US TO USE THE OUTDATED PROCS AND FORMS. WE ARE IN A CATCH-22 SITUATION. SCANNING OF NDT PROCS MANUAL CAUSED NUMEROUS ERRORS IN PROCS; SETTINGS; CALIBRATIONS OF EQUIP; ETC. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: REPORTER STATED THE CONVERTED NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING PROCEDURES THAT WERE SCANNED HAD MANY ERRORS; ESPECIALLY IN GRAMMAR AND SPELL CHECK. THE SYMBOL FOR DEGREES; AS IN TEMPERATURE; OR FLIGHT CONTROL MOVEMENTS WERE SHOWN AS NUMERICAL ZERO'S CAUSING ALL TYPES OF CONFUSION; MIS-APPLICATIONS AND DISAGREEMENTS. REPORTER ALSO STATED THAT AFTER NUMEROUS PHONE CALLS; MEETINGS AND DOCUMENT REVIEWS; MANY OF THE ERRORS HAVE SINCE BEEN CORRECTED. OTHER MAINTENANCE MANUALS HOWEVER; STILL NEED TO BE CORRECTED AS A RESULT OF THE SCANNING PROCESS.
