A DO328 CREW DECLARED AN EMER AND RETURNED LAND AFTER THE 'A' HYD PUMP FAILED AND THE LNDG GEAR COULD NOT BE RAISED. THE QRH WAS MISLEADING.

Synopsis

A DO328 CREW DECLARED AN EMER AND RETURNED LAND AFTER THE 'A' HYD PUMP FAILED AND THE LNDG GEAR COULD NOT BE RAISED. THE QRH WAS MISLEADING.

Narrative

ON TKOF WE WENT TO PUT THE GEAR UP AND NOTICED THAT THE GEAR DID NOT FULLY COME UP. THE NOSEWHEEL CAME UP BUT BOTH MAINS WERE STILL DOWN. THEN FOLLOWING THAT THE CAUTION CAS MESSAGE CAME UP FOR HYD 'A' PUMP FAILURE AND HYD 'A' PRESSURE LOW. AT THIS TIME; TWR CALLED US TO GO TO DEP; SO I TOLD THE FO TO TELL TWR THAT WE HAVE A GEAR PROB AND WE NEED TO STAY IN THE AREA. TWR CALLED US BACK SAYING THAT HE NOTICED THAT THE GEAR DID NOT COME UP AND GAVE UP A HDG AND TOLD TO STAY AT 5000 FT. THEN WE WENT OVER TO DEP; TOLD THEM WHAT WAS GOING ON. I TOLD THE FO TO TELL ATC WE WANT TO STAY IN THE AREA BECAUSE WE ARE GOING TO NEED TO COME BACK AROUND AND LAND. AT THIS POINT WE WENT TO THE QRH FOR HYD 'A' PUMP FAIL. FOLLOWED THE QRH TILL IT SAID 'LNDG GEAR EXTENSION...APPLY' REFER TO 10-2 THEN WE TURNED TO THAT PART AND READ IT OVER. SO THEN I TOLD THE FO TO GO BACK TO THE HYD 'A' PUMP FAILURE CHKLIST. WHEN HE DID; HE OPENED UP THE HYD 'A' PUMP FAILURE AND HYD 'B' PUMP FAILURE CHKLIST. SO I SAID 'LET'S MAKE SURE WE FINISH IT UP.' AT THIS POINT; I CALLED DISPATCH; TOLD THEM WHAT WAS GOING ON AND TO CALL MAINT. I TOLD THEM WHAT WAS GOING ON. THEY SAID 'TRY TURNING THE 'A' PUMP OFF THEN ON.' THIS DIDN'T WORK; SO WE BOTH KNEW AT THIS POINT WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO DO AN EMER GEAR EXTENSION. WE DID IT AND THE GEAR CAME DOWN FINE. EVERYTHING WAS MOSTLY NORMAL; BUT AFTER RUNNING THE HYD 'A' PUMP FAILURE AND HYD 'B' PUMP FAILURE CHKLIST; IT SAID 'TURN OFF HYD 'B' PUMP OFF.' WE DID; BUT KNOWING THE WAY THE HYD SYS WORKS; I KNEW THAT THIS WAS NOT RIGHT AND INFORMED THE FO AS I PUT THE HYD 'B' PUMP BACK ONLINE. SO EVERYTHING SEEMED TO BE IN PLACE. I TOLD MAINT THAT WE HAD 3 GREEN. THEY SAID 'OK AND COME BACK TO THE FIELD.' WE TOLD APCH THAT WE ARE READY TO COME AND TO HAVE THE TRUCKS STAND BY. WE RAN THE IN-RANGE AND THE APCH CHKLIST AND CAME IN TO LAND. EVERYTHING WAS NORMAL AND THE LNDG WAS GOOD; BUT IT TOOK A LITTLE BIT TO SLOW IT DOWN. AS WE TURNED OFF THEN THE NOSEWHEEL STEERING WAS NOT WORKING BUT THE PLANE WAS MOVING FINE; SO WE PARKED THE ACFT IN FIRST AVAILABLE SPOT. I WOULD SUGGEST THAT WHEN YOU TURN TO A PAGE IN A CHKLIST; MAKE SURE THAT YOU GO BACK TO THE RIGHT PAGE.
