C182 PILOT REPORTS LOSING CONTROL DURING LANDING; CAUSING PROP STRIKE AND GAR. SECOND ATTEMPT IS SUCCESSFUL.
Narrative
I ENTERED A R DOWNWIND FOR RWY 17R AND WAS CLRED TO LAND. I MADE A NORMAL APCH; CROSSED THE NUMBERS AT ABOUT 70 KTS AND TOUCHED DOWN ON THE MAINS. I LANDED WITH 30 DEGS OF FLAPS; AND I RECALL HEARING THE STALL HORN CHIRP BEFORE I SET THE MAINS DOWN. AFTER LOWERING THE NOSE I FELT THE TAIL SWING TO THE R; AND NOSE TO THE L. THE TAIL THEN LIFTED; PITCHING THE ACFT FORWARD AND TO THE R. AS I TRIED TO RECOVER DIRECTIONAL CTL; THE PROP STRUCK THE RWY. WHEN I WAS ABLE TO RECOVER DIRECTIONAL CTL; I WAS ALREADY VERY CLOSE TO THE R EDGE OF THE RWY; SWERVING TO THE R. I ADDED PWR TO BRING THE ACFT BACK INTO THE AIR; PITCHED TO CLB; CLEANED UP THE GEAR; AND BEGAN TO CLEAN UP THE FLAPS SLOWLY TO GO AROUND. I MADE A SUCCESSFUL GAR; VERY RATTLED; BUT WORKING MY LNDG CHKLIST TO AVOID COMPOUNDING MY MISHAP. I MADE A NORMAL LNDG ON THE SECOND ATTEMPT. THE WINDS AT THE TIME WERE LIGHT AND VARIABLE; WITH ABOUT 4 KTS OUT OF 040 DEGS; BUT LNDG RWY 17L/R. I BELIEVE A GUST OF WIND FROM THE E PUSHED THE TAIL W; TO THE L. MY INITIAL ATTEMPT TO CORRECT WAS WITH THE RUDDER; AND THEN THE AILERONS TO BRING THE L WING DOWN. I WAS UNABLE TO CORRECT BEFORE THE TAIL LIFTED AND THE PROP STRUCK THE RWY. AFTER THE INITIAL SWERVE; ADDING PWR IMMEDIATELY PUSHED THE TAIL DOWN; AND I WAS ABLE TO INITIATE A GAR. I WAS ABLE TO RECOVER THE LNDG AND GAR; BUT THE PROP WAS DAMAGED IN MY RECOVERY. FORTUNATELY; THERE WERE NO INJURIES. AS A RESULT OF THIS INCIDENT; I WILL SEEK ADDITIONAL XWIND LNDG INSTRUCTION; AND FOCUS ON CONTINUING TO FLY THE ACFT AFTER TOUCHDOWN; MAINTAINING DIRECTIONAL CTL.
