A SAAB SF340B CAPTAIN REPORTS ON NOTICING A BURNING RUBBER-PLASTIC SMELL WHILE DEPLANING. SAW WHITISH SMOKE COMING FROM ONE OF THE NACA VENTS ON THE #1 ENG. FIRED LEFT FIRE BOTTLE; SMOKE DISAPPEARED.

Narrative

AFTER ALL THE PAX AND CREW OTHER THAN MYSELF WERE OFF THE PLANE AND GOING THROUGH CUSTOMS; I WAS GATHERING THE REST OF MY BELONGINGS IN THE PLANE AND CONFIRMING EVERYTHING WAS OFF. AS I WAS GOING DOWN THE AIRSTAIRS I NOTICED A BURNING RUBBER-PLASTIC SMELL. I SAW A SMALL AMOUNT OF WHITISH SMOKE COMING FROM ONE OF THE NACA VENTS ON THE R SIDE OF THE #1 ENG. I TOLD THE GND CREW TO DISCONNECT THE EXTERNAL PWR AND TO TAKE ALL THE COVERS OFF THE ENG THEY PUT ON FOR THE NIGHT. I ALSO TOLD THEM TO CONTACT THE FIRE DEPT. IT SEEMED THAT THE SMOKE WAS GETTING WORSE SO I WENT INTO THE COCKPIT; PULLED THE L FIRE HANDLE AND DISCHARGED THE L EXTINGUISHER. I SAW THE SMOKE XFER FROM THE TOP OF THE ENG TO THE ENG INLET; THEN DISAPPEAR ALTOGETHER. I THEN CONTACTED MAINT AND OTHER DEPT HEADS. AFTER THE FIRE DEPT AGREED THERE WAS NO MORE THREAT; AND MAINT GAVE ME THE OK; I AGAIN MADE SURE EVERYTHING WAS OFF AND I LEFT FOR THE HOTEL. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: REPORTER STATED THE WHITISH SMOKE CAME FROM THE UPPER VENT ON THE INBOARD SIDE OF #1 ENG NACELLE COWLING. HE DID NOT HAVE ANY INFO ON THE CAUSE OF THE BURNING RUBBER-PLASTIC SMELL.
