SR22 PLT FLIES INTO GRAND CANYON SFRA WITHOUT FULLY UNDERSTANDING CHARTS. FEARS HE MAY HAVE VIOLATED OPERATIONAL RESTRICTIONS.
Narrative
I CONTACTED FSS FOR SOUTHERN NEVADA AND ASKED HIM FOR INFO ON FLYING OVER THE GRAND CANYON. THE ONLY INFO HE HAD WAS A FEW PARAGRAPHS FROM THE AFD WHICH I HAD READ AS WELL. I ALSO STUDIED A CURRENT LAS VEGAS SECTIONAL AND CURRENT GRAND CANYON SPECIAL FRONT AND BACK. I THINK I COULD HAVE VIOLATED THE VFR SPECIAL PROCS IN THE GRAND CANYON. I ALSO SPOKE WITH A LCL LOW TIME CFI FOR ADVICE. I FEEL THE GRAND CANYON CHART IS DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND AFTER HRS OF STUDY. FSS WAS COMPLETELY UNEDUCATED IN THESE PROCS. THE FAA REGS ARE DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND AS WELL. THE CAPABILITY OF THE TURBO SR22 PROVIDED ME WITH INCREDIBLE SITUATIONAL AWARENESS WITH THE FOLLOWING SYS. TAWS; TCAS; DUAL GARMIN 430W'S; SEATBELT; AIR BAGS; AND THE CAPS PARACHUTE SYS. BECAUSE OF THESE SYS AND SEE AND AVOID; I DON'T THINK I PUT MYSELF OR ANY OTHER ACFT IN DANGER. I'M FILING THIS RPT MOST IMPORTANTLY TO IMPROVE THE CHARTS IN THAT AREA AND TO PROVIDE CONTRACTOR WITH BETTER TRAINING. I WANT TO REITERATE AT NO TIME WERE ANY ACFT OR HELIS; INCLUDING MYSELF; IN DANGER. I HOPE THIS FORM WILL HELP IMPROVE SAFETY IN THIS AREA.
