Synopsis

AFTER DEPARTING LAX; B737 FLT CREW BECOMES CONFUSED WHETHER THEY ARE FLYING THE VTU 5 AS FILED OR THE GMN 4 AS CLEARED. ATC ALSO BECOMES CONFUSED.

Narrative

WE RECEIVED A CLRNC VIA OUR COMPANY DISPATCH FORM TO FLY A NON-STANDARD VTU 5 DEP. THE CLRNC WE RECEIVED FROM ATC; HOWEVER WAS FOR THE STANDARD GMN 4. ON DEP; WE FLEW THE GMN 4. WHEN ATC ISSUED US A VECTOR TO JOIN THE GMN 4 DEP; WE STARTED OUR TURN TO THE ASSIGNED HEADING BUT WE QUERIED ATC ABOUT THE VECTOR AS WE MISTAKENLY REVERTED TO THE VTU 5 CLRNC. THIS CREATED CONFUSION FOR ATC AND MOST LIKELY DISRUPTED THEIR PLANS AS THEY GAVE US A DEFAULT HEADING WHILE THEY LOOKED UP OUR CLRNC. WE NEVER DEPARTED FROM OUR ASSIGNED DEP OR SUBSEQUENT HEADINGS; BUT WE DID CAUSE ATC CONFUSION BY FORCING THEM TO MOMENTARILY REROUTE US WHILE VERIFYING OUR CLRNC. THE PDC CLRNC FORMAT WOULD BE SIMPLER IF IT ONLY GAVE US OUR CLRNC WITHOUT EXTRANEOUS INFORMATION; SUCH AS ALTERNATE DEPARTURE PROCS WHICH WE ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO FLY.SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 785886: THE RELEASE FOR THIS FLT HAD 'NON STANDARD RTE' IN THE UPPER CORNER OF THE RELEASE. IT INDICATED WE WERE FILLED VIA THE VTU 5 DEP INSTEAD OF THE GMN 4 SID. WE RECEIVED OUR CLRNC VIA PDC AND THAT CLRNC CLEARED US BACK TO THE GMN 4 SID. SHORTLY AFTER DEP WITH DEP CONTROL; WE WERE GIVEN A NORTHERLY HEADING TO INTERCEPT THE GMN 4 DEP WHICH WE WERE FLYING. I MISTAKENLY REVERTED MY THOUGHTS TO THE VTU 5 DEP AND TOLD DEP WE WERE ON THE VTU 5 SID. DEP THEN GAVE US A WESTERLY HEADING FOR VTU. SHORTLY THEREAFTER WE RECEIVED FURTHER HEADINGS TO ON COURSE. MY INCORRECT STATEMENT; THAT WE WERE ON THE VTU 5 SID CAUSED SOME CONFUSION WITH DEPARTURE. UPON ARR I CALLED SOCAL AND THEY WERE WORRIED THAT WE HAD RECEIVED THE WRONG CLRNC. AFTER EXPLAINING THAT WE HAD GOTTEN THE RIGHT CLRNC BUT HAD MISSTATED THE CLRNC WE WERE ON IT CLEARED UP THE SITUATION. THINK TWICE BEFORE KEYING THE MIC.
