Narrative
I WAS FLYING A C177RG. I DEPARTED VFR DOWN THE COAST AT 3500 FT; AS I PULLED MY GEAR UP; IT RETRACTED AS NORMAL BUT WHEN IT LOCKED IN THE 'UP' POS; THE AMMETER STARTED POPPING SO I HAD TO PULL THE LNDG GEAR CIRCUIT BREAKER FOR IT TO STOP. I CONTACTED APCH TO GET FLT FOLLOWING. WHEN I WAS ABOUT 30 MI OUT; I CHKED THE AWOS AND THE WINDS WERE BLOWING 080 DEGS AT 6 KTS. WHEN I HAD THE ARPT IN SIGHT I CANCELED FLT FOLLOWING WITH APCH AND CHANGED OVER TO UNICOM TO ADVISE OF MY INTENTIONS. I WAS GOING TO OVERFLY THE FIELD AND SET UP FOR A L DOWNWIND FOR RWY X. WHEN I STARTED TO DO SO; I NOTICED RWY X WASN'T LIGHTED; SO I WAS ALREADY SET UP FOR A R DOWNWIND FOR RWY YY. AS I WAS TURNING BASE; I DID MY LNDG CHKLIST; I PUT THE GEAR HANDLE IN THE 'DOWN' POS; AND FINISHED MY CHKLIST -- FORGETTING TO PUT THE LNDG GEAR FUSE BACK IN; THE GEAR FAILED TO COME DOWN. SO BECAUSE OF MY CARELESSNESS; I CAUSED THE PLANE TO DO A GEAR-UP LNDG; AND AS SOON AS I EXITED THE PLANE; I CONTACTED THE FAA AND THE APPROPRIATE PEOPLE FOR THE INCIDENT.
