MD80 FLT CREW LANDING IN GUSTY CROSSWIND HAS WINGTIP CONTACT RWY.

Narrative

ON A VISUAL APCH TO RWY XXL; WE WERE CLRED TO LAND WITH A WIND RPT OF 170 DEGS AT 17 KTS GUST 27 KTS. THE FO FLEW A NORMAL; STABILIZED APCH. TARGET SPD WAS SET AT REF +10 KTS WITH NUMEROUS WINDSHEAR-INDUCED SPD EXCURSIONS OF +/-10 TO 15 KTS. IN THE LNDG FLARE; THE ACFT ROLLED SHARPLY TO THE L. THE FO IMMEDIATELY CORRECTED TO THE R AND TOUCHED DOWN NORMALLY. WE PROCEEDED TO THE GATE AND DURING THE POSTFLT INSPECTION; I DISCOVERED DAMAGE TO THE L WINGTIP (LNDG LIGHT; WINGTIP; OUTBOARD SLAT SECTION AND POS LIGHT). SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 789819: WHILE LNDG IN GUSTY CONDITIONS ON RWY XXL WINDS RPTED AT 190 DEGS/17 KTS GUST 27 KTS; WINDSHEAR WAS ENCOUNTERED IN THE FLARE WHICH CAUSED THE L WING TO DROP ABRUPTLY AND CONTACT THE RWY. DAMAGE TO THE ACFT INCLUDED A LNDG LIGHT; SLAT; WINGTIP; AND NAV LIGHT ASSEMBLY. THERE WAS NO INDICATION TO THE CREW THAT THE WING HAD CONTACTED THE RWY UNTIL WE WERE PARKED AT THE GATE AND DID THE POSTFLT INSPECTION. MAINT WAS NOTIFIED AND THEY NOTIFIED ARPT OPS.
