EXPERIMENTAL KITFOX PLT EXECUTES A GO-AROUND AFTER A BALKED TOUCH-AND-GO AND SUBSEQUENTLY OVERFLIES A 'NON-MOVEMENT AREA.'

Narrative

DURING A PLANNED TOUCH-AND-GO LNDG; I REACTED TO THE BEGINNING OF A GND LOOP WITH A GAR DECISION. THE FACT THAT I HAD SWIVELED TO THE L MEANT THAT I WAS HEADING TOWARDS THE RWY EDGE WITH VERY LITTLE AIRSPD. I MADE IT MY IMMEDIATE GOAL TO BE AIRBORNE BEFORE LEAVING THE HARD SURFACE; AND DID; BUT JUST BARELY. AT THAT POINT I WAS SEVERAL DEGS OFF RWY HDG; MAYBE 30 DEGS; MILKING STRAIGHT FOR MORE AIRSPD. I WAS LOOKING AT A POLE 10-20 FT HIGH WITH ANEMOMETER ON TOP WHICH POSED A RISK IF I TRIED TO TURN BACK TO RWY HDG RIGHT AWAY. CONSEQUENTLY; I PUT OFF THE TURN UNTIL I HAD BETTER ALT AND AIRSPD; LETTING THE POLE PASS TO MY R. THIS WOULD BE WHAT BRAINERD TWR CALLED 'FLT OVER A NON-MOVEMENT AREA.' I MIGHT HAVE GONE AS FAR AS THE PARALLEL TXWY; BUT NO FURTHER. I RETURNED TO RWY CTRLINE AS SOON AS I COULD SAFELY DO SO. NEXT LNDG WAS UNEVENTFUL FULL-STOP. I HAVE LOTS OF FLYING EXPERIENCE IN BOTH HVY AND LIGHT ACFT; BUT AM NEW TO TAILDRAGGERS. I HAD LOGGED SEVERAL LNDGS DURING THE PREVIOUS WK IN THE KITFOX AND THINGS WENT WELL. MY COMFORT LEVEL WAS IMPROVING AND I MIGHT HAVE LET MY GUARD DOWN PREMATURELY. THE WINDS WERE PRETTY MUCH DOWN THE RWY AT 7 BUT HAD BEEN GUSTY EARLIER; MIGHT HAVE BEEN A FACTOR. THIS UNINTENDED AIR SHOW WAS MY BEST EFFORT TO BRING THE FLT TO A SAFE CONCLUSION.
