Narrative
AFTER AN UNEVENTFUL VISUAL LNDG TO RWY 4R AT ORD; OUR FLT WAS GIVEN CLRNC TO TAXI TO OUR GATE BY ORD GND VIA TXWYS D AND B TO GATE. DURING TAXI I ASKED THE CAPT TO MONITOR GND CTL WHILE I CONTACTED RAMP CTL. WHILE COMING BACK ON TO GND CTL FREQ; THE CAPT WAS CONDUCTING A R TURN ONTO TXWY B. THE GND CTLR CALLED FOR OUR ACFT TO DO AN IMMEDIATE STOP. THE CAPT CONDUCTED AN EMER GND STOP. B747; EXITING THE INTL APRON AT THE INTXN OF THE 'WEST PORT' AND TXWY B NEARLY MISSED THE FO SIDE OF THE COCKPIT WITH ITS L WINGTIP. I MENTIONED TO GND THAT THE MISS WAS FAR TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT. GND CTL SAID THAT THEY REALIZED THAT; AND THAT THE B747 HAD BEEN TOLD TO STOP AND GIVE WAY TO OUR ACFT AS IT INGRESSED TO THE GATE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 792566: I APPLIED MAX BRAKING AND STOPPED THE ACFT VERY ABRUPTLY. AS I CAME TO A STOP ABOUT 3/4 OF THE WAY THROUGH THE TURN JUST SHORT OF TXWY; I SAW THE B747 RAPIDLY EXIT THE RAMP AND TURN ONTO TXWY B VERY CLOSE TO US. I WAS EXTREMELY CONCERNED ABOUT THE WINGTIP; BUT THERE WAS NOTHING I COULD DO ABOUT IT. THE WINGTIP PASSED LESS THAN 10 FT FROM THE COCKPIT WINDOW. GND AGAIN STATED THAT 'HE WAS SUPPOSED TO GIVE WAY BUT DID NOT FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS.' MY FO REPLIED THAT THAT WAS WAY TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT. I MADE A PA APOLOGIZING FOR THE SUDDEN STOP AND EXPLAINED THAT IT WAS NECESSARY TO AVOID BEING HIT BY AN ACFT THAT DID NOT FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. I THEN TAXIED IN TO THE GATE. IF I HAD MADE A NORMAL STOP; THIS RPT WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY DIFFERENT!
