AN M20F PILOT LANDED GEAR UP.

Narrative

WE BEGAN A SIGHT SEEING FLT AT APPROX XA30 PM. I HAD 2 TEENAGE PAX ONE OF WHICH WAS WANTING TO BECOME A PVT PLT. WE FLEW MANEUVERS AND OVER FAMILIAR SITES. AT APPROX XB10 PM I ENTERED THE L DOWNWIND FOR RWY XX. I NOTICED MY YOUNG PAX WAS LOOKING AT THE ACTIONS I WAS TAKING WITH REGARDS TO PROP FUEL AND TRIM SO I BEGAN TO EXPLAIN WHAT I WAS DOING. AS I WAS EXPLAINING I CALLED TO TURN BASE AND THEN FINAL. I WAS A LITTLE SHORTER FINAL THAN I WOULD HAVE LIKED SO I EXPLAINED THAT I WAS SLIPPING THE PLANE TO LOSE A LITTLE ALT. AT THIS TIME THE PLANE IS FULL RICH; PROP IS FULL RPM; AND FLAPS ARE SET. I THEN TURNED ON THE ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP AND BECOME FIXATED ON GREASING THE LNDG FOR MY YOUNG PAX. I NOTICED THAT MY FLOAT DISTANCE WAS MORE THAN NORMAL BUT SPD WAS GOOD. AS WAS MY NORMAL PRACTICE WHEN THE WIND WOULD PERMIT MY GOAL WAS TO ALWAYS LAND THE PLANE AS SLOW AS POSSIBLE. IN MY MIND I WAS MAINTAINING A SHORT FIELD LNDG PROFICIENCY; SO WHEN THE STALL HORN WENT OFF I WAS SO CLOSE TO THE GND THAT I PAID IT NO ATTN. THEN I HEARD A SECOND HORN AS I THROTTLED ALL THE WAY BACK AND THOUGHT THAT IT WAS STRANGE BUT THE HORN PITCH WAS THE SAME AS THE STALL HORN. MOMENTS LATER I HEARD THE FAINT SOUND OF THE ANTENNA DRAGGING. IT WAS ONLY ANOTHER SECOND OR TWO AND I REALIZED WHAT I HAD DONE. NOW MY GOAL WAS TO MAINTAIN CTL OF THE PLANE AND TRY TO MINIMIZE THE DAMAGE. WE SLID DOWN THE CTRLINE AND I TURNED THE RUDDER TO TRY AND GET US OFF THE RWY. MOMENTS LATER WE CAME TO REST JUST OFF THE RWY. I THEN IMMEDIATELY TURNED ALL PWR OFF AND THE PAX EXITED THE PLANE QUICKLY. THE PLANE SUSTAINED RELATIVELY MINOR DAMAGE TO THE UNDER BELLY. WE GENTLY JACKED THE PLANE UP; DROPPED THE GEAR AND AT APPROX XE15 PM HAD THE PLANE BACK IN THE HANGAR. HAVING NOW HAD AN EXPERIENCE THAT I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD HAVE MY ADVICE WOULD BE TO MAKE THE GA PUBLIC AWARE OF THE DEVICES THAT ARE AVAILABLE THAT WILL GIVE YOU A VERBAL COMMAND TO CHK GEAR. FOR A MINIMAL AMOUNT OF EXPENSE YOU WOULD NOT HAVE TO RELY ON THE INTERP OF A HORN. IT IS MY PERSONAL OPINION THAT SUCH AN AWARENESS WOULD ALL BUT STOP GEAR UP LNDGS.
