AN ACR IOE CAPT AND INSTRUCTOR COMMENT ON FLL ATCT TRAFFIC HANDLING AND THE DANGEROUS OPERATION WITH A SINGLE RWY AND HEAVY TFC.

Narrative

I WAS ON MY CAPT IOE AS A NEW CAPT. MY IOE CAPT TOLD ME ON THE LEG DOWN TO FLL THAT THE CTLRS AT FLL NEED TO BE WATCHED CAREFULLY. HE HAD SEEN 2 OR 3 QUESTIONABLE EVENTS TAKE PLACE AT FLL; AND TOLD ME TO BE ON MY TOES. NOT AN HR LATER; WE WERE TAXIING OUT FOR TKOF ON RWY 9L. WE WERE #2 IN LINE; BESIDE A B737; THAT WAS EVIDENTLY BEING HELD FOR SOME REASON. WE HAD BOTH ENGS RUNNING AND WERE READY FOR TKOF. TWR TOLD US TO TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD; AND BE READY TO GO. (TFC THERE IS VERY BUSY; WITH ONLY ONE MAJOR RWY; AND THEY TRY TO SQUEEZE TFC IN AND OUT...I UNDERSTAND.) WE PROMPTLY TAXIED ONTO THE RWY. ANOTHER CTLR (DIFFERENT VOICE) THEN TOLD US TO VACATE THE RWY AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. WE COULD ONLY DO A QUICK 180 DEGS TO THE L BACK OFF OF THE RWY. EVIDENTLY; THE SECOND CTLR THOUGHT THE TFC ON FINAL WAS TOO CLOSE IN. AS SOON AS WE HAD TAXIED OFF THE RWY AND TURNED AROUND; AN ACFT LANDED; AND WE WERE TOLD TO TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD; AND TO BE READY TO GO (AGAIN). WE TAXIED INTO POS; AND WERE CLRED FOR AN IMMEDIATE TKOF. AS I BROUGHT THE PWR UP; THE IOE CAPT POINTED OUT THE PRECEDING ACFT WAS STILL ON THE RWY...NOT JUST THE TAIL; BUT THE ENTIRE ACFT WAS STILL ON THE RWY. I WENT BACK TO IDLE AND HELD THE BRAKES UNTIL THE ACFT HAD CLRED THE RWY. THEN WE TOOK OFF. THE REST OF THE TKOF WAS UNEVENTFUL. IT APPEARS THAT THE FAST PACE OF THE FLL ARPT IS JEOPARDIZING THE OP.
