ALERT INTERVENTION BY THE FO AND GND CTLR PREVENTS A RWY INCURSION AT ABQ.
Narrative
WE WERE GIVEN CLRNC FROM GND TO TAXI TO RWY 8 VIA TXWY A. THERE WERE SOME ACFT FROM ANOTHER CARRIER PARKED REMOTELY TO THE L OF US (AS WE FACED THE TERMINAL) SO FOR SAFETY; WE MADE A R TURNOUT. THE CAPT BEGAN HIS TAXI S TOWARDS TXWY A ON THE RAMP; VERY NEAR TXWY C. I EXPECTED HIM TO TURN W ONTO TXWY A BUT INSTEAD HE CONTINUED ON TXWY C HDG TOWARDS RWY 8/26. THAT'S WHEN I STATED; 'THIS IS ALPHA; THAT'S THE RWY;' AND POINTED AHEAD. HE IMMEDIATELY STOPPED AND STARTED A SLOW HARD TURN ONTO TXWY A (SINCE WE HAD OVERSHOT IT). AT THIS TIME GND CTL STATED; 'COMPANY NUMBER HOLD YOUR POS.' A TWIN ENG GA ACFT WAS ON ITS TKOF ROLL ON RWY 8. I TOLD THE GND CTLR WE HAD MISSED TXWY A BUT CAUGHT OUR MISTAKE AND WERE HOLDING. GND CTL THEN CLRED US BACK ONTO TXWY A IF WE COULD MAKE THE TURN. WE CONTINUED ON TXWY A TO RWY 8 FOR TKOF WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. NO PART OF OUR ACFT EVER CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE ONTO RWY 8 FROM TXWY C. GND CTL WAS UNDERSTANDABLY CONCERNED WHEN WE PASSED TXWY A AND IT LOOKED LIKE WE WERE HEADED TOWARDS RWY 8 WITH AN ACFT ON THE TKOF ROLL. WE HAD CAUGHT OUR MISTAKE BEFORE GND CTL INSTRUCTED US TO HOLD OUR POS. THE CAPT STATED AFTERWARDS THAT HE HAD A MENTAL PICTURE OF TXWY A BEING A TXWY ON A DIFFERENT PIECE OF PAVEMENT THAN THE RAMP. HE WAS ALSO THINKING ABOUT THE RAIN SHOWERS IN THE TERMINAL AREA AND IF WE WOULD HAVE TO DEVIATE ON OUR CLBOUT. IT SHOWS THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING 2 SETS OF EYES LOOKING OUTSIDE; ALSO A GND CTLR PAYING ATTN. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 794755: MY SEAT POS WAS A LITTLE UNCOMFORTABLE SO I BEGAN TO ADJUST IT AS I TAXIED S ON THE RAMP TOWARDS TXWY C. I NEED TO FOLLOW COMPANY PROCS AND FOCUS EXCLUSIVELY ON SAFELY TAXIING THE ACFT TO AND FROM THE GATE. IF THE SEAT ISN'T ADJUSTED PROPERLY; I SHOULD STOP THE ACFT; SET THE BRAKE; ADJUST THE SEAT; THEN RESUME TAXIING. I SHOULD LOOK CLOSELY AT THE TAXI RTE USING THE ARPT DIAGRAM PAGE. I SHOULD NOT RELY ON INACCURATE AND INCORRECT MENTAL MAPS TO NAV ON THE GND. POOR TAXI RTE PLANNING.
