Narrative
WINDY CONDITIONS PREDICTED IN THE 20 KT RANGE OUT OF THE S. AFTER OCCASIONAL LIGHT TO MODERATE TURB ON 40 MIN FLT ZZZ TWR RPTED WINDS AT 20 KTS GUSTING TO 28 KTS FROM 170-180 DEGS. I WAS CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 10R. I HAD EXPERIENCE IN 25 KT XWINDS BEFORE AND WAS CONCERNED BUT NOT ALARMED. I COMMITTED TO A GAR AND DIVERT IF I HAD TROUBLE CTLING THE ACFT ON FINAL; BUT I HAD NO PROB HOLDING THE CTR WITHOUT FULL DEFLECTION. I WANTED TO LINE UP ON THE R SIDE OF THE RWY TO ALLOW THE MOST MARGIN FOR A GUST BUT THERE WAS A COMMERCIAL JET WAITING TO DEPART AFTER I LANDED ON THE R SIDE OF THE RWY ENTRANCE. I TRACKED DOWN THE CTRLINE AND AS I ENTERED THE FLARE AND CUT THE PWR I WAS HIT BY A HUGE GUST FROM THE R. THE R WING PITCHED UP 20-30 DEGS. AFTER I WAS ABLE TO LEVEL THE WINGS I WAS ABOUT 5 FT OVER THE GRASS BTWN THE RWY AND THE TXWY WITH THE STALL HORN BLARING. I DECIDED AGAINST A GAR THAT CLOSE TO THE GND AND EXECUTED A SOFT FIELD LNDG IN THE TALL GRASS. I KEPT THE PLANE MOVING TO THE NEXT TXWY THAT CUT ACROSS AND STOPPED. THE TWR THEN CLRED ME TO TAXI I PROCEEDED TO THE FBO WITHOUT INCIDENT. MY MAIN WHEEL PANTS AND STRUT FAIRINGS SUSTAINED COSMETIC DAMAGE AND MUST BE REPAIRED. I ALSO HAD A COMPLETE TEARDOWN DONE ON THE BRAKES AND LNDG GEAR. IN HINDSIGHT THE GUST EXCEEDED THE XWIND CAPABILITIES OF MY ACFT. I SHOULD HAVE EITHER DRIVEN BACK HOME AND GOT THE PLANE THE NEXT DAY OR AT THE VERY LEAST DIVERTED TO ANOTHER ARPT WITH A RWY MORE CLOSELY ALIGNED WITH THE WIND DIRECTION. I AM NOW COMMITTED TO A LOWER SET OF PERSONAL MINIMUMS REGARDING XWIND LNDGS. PLEASE LEARN FROM MY EXPENSIVE MISTAKE AND DO NOT EXCEED THE PUBLISHED GUIDELINES FOR XWIND LNDG ON YOUR ACFT.
