A LEAD MECHANIC REPORTS ON HIS MISTAKE; AND THE SAME CONTINUING PROBLEM OTHER MECHANICS HAVE HAD INSTALLING AN INCORRECT TIRE/WHEEL ASSEMBLY ON DIFFERENT SERIES OF THEIR B737-900 AIRCRAFT.

A LEAD MECHANIC REPORTS ON HIS MISTAKE; AND THE SAME CONTINUING PROBLEM OTHER MECHANICS HAVE HAD INSTALLING AN INCORRECT TIRE/WHEEL ASSEMBLY ON DIFFERENT SERIES OF THEIR B737-900 AIRCRAFT.
Narrative
I WAS GIVEN TASK TO REPLACE ACFT X #3 TIRE CHANGE; WHICH IS A B737-900 TYPE ACFT. I PUT ON A B737-900 TIRE BUT THE TIRE WAS NOT RATED FOR THIS B737-900 WHICH IS A HIGHER GROSS WT TIRE. THE TIRE I PUT ON WAS STENCILED USE ON B737 TYPE 700-800-900. I FAILED TO REALIZE THE TIRE WAS NOT RATED FOR OUR NEW B737 TYPE OF ACFT. I FEEL THE PROB CAN BE RESOLVED BY STENCILING ON THE TIRE 'NOT FOR USE ON THIS TYPE ACFT.' THIS MISTAKE HAS BEEN MADE MANY TIMES OVER AND I AM TRYING TO EDUCATE ALL TECHNICIANS OF THIS ISSUE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: REPORTER STATED THEY HAVE DIFFERENT SERIES OF B737-900 AIRCRAFT THAT REQUIRE TIRE/WHEEL ASSEMBLIES THAT CAN CARRY HEAVIER FUEL LOADS. BUT THE TIRE/WHEEL ASSEMBLIES FOR THEIR LOWER GROSS WEIGHT -900'S ARE BEING INSTALLED ON THE HEAVIER GROSS SERIES -900'S. REPORTER STATED THE TIRES ARE THE SAME; BUT THE TIRE WHEEL HALVES FOR THE HEAVIER RATED -900'S ARE BEEFIER AND STRONGER. THAT STRENGTH IS ACHIEVED BY USING A LONGER HEAT TREATMENT CURING PROCESS. REPORTER STATED THE AIRCRAFT HE HAD INADVERTENTLY INSTALLED THE LOWER RATED TIRE/WHEEL ASSEMBLY ON; HAD MADE FIFTY-FIVE LANDINGS IN TWELVE DAYS.
