Narrative
MY FRIEND; A COMMERCIAL PLT WITH OVER 300 HRS BUT NO TAILWHEEL TIME; WANTED TO SEE WHAT THE SMA IS LIKE; SO WE SCHEDULED THE PLANE FOR AN HR; WHILE IN TOWN. I WAS EXTREMELY TIRED; AS WE WERE IN THE BAY AREA FOR ONLY 3 DAYS; AND I HAD BEEN FILLING IN BUSINESS APPOINTMENTS; INTERVIEWS; MUCH DRIVING; LITTLE SLEEP INTO THIS PERIOD; AS WELL AS A LONG AND FAIRLY STRESSFUL FLT FROM SEATTLE IN A LIGHT PLANE. SO WE BOTH HESITATED; HE GAVE ME THE OPTION NOT TO GO BUT IN THE END I TOLD HIM I WOULD BE ALERT ONCE FLYING. I EXPRESSED A LOT OF RESERVATIONS ABOUT FLYING FROM THE BACK SEAT; AS I HAVE MINIMAL EXPENCE IN THAT SEAT; BUT AGAIN GAVE IN; SO HE COULD HAVE A MORE REALISTIC EXPERIENCE IN THE PLANE; FROM THE FRONT SEAT. I TOOK OFF INTO THE WIND ON THE DIRT RWY; WE FLEW AROUND THE AREA; AND I ALLOWED HIM TO HAVE THE CTLS TO GET THE FEEL OF THEM. I TOLD HIM IN NO WAY COULD I ALLOW HIM TO DO ANY OF THE LNDG PHASE AS I WAS NOT COMPETENT TO CORRECT NOR FELL I HAD THE JURISDICTION TO ALLOW HIM TO DO SO. I MADE A TOUCH AND GO ON THE X-WIND RWY; WHICH IS PAVED NOW. I CHOSE THIS RWY AS THERE WERE PUDDLES; MUD AND CONES ON THE DIRT RWY; AND I THOUGHT IT SAFER WITH LIMITED VISIBILITY TO BE ON A HARD-SURFACED RWY. ON OUR SECOND LNDG; TO BE A FULL STOP; I TOUCHED DOWN OK; AS FAR AS I KNOW. EVERYTHING HAD BEEN VERY STABILIZED AND THERE WAS NOT A STRONG X-WIND ON FINAL. HOWEVER; I APPLIED BRAKES TOO SOON AND TOO HARD; NOT SURE OF MAINTAINING CTRLINE ON THE NARROW RWY WITH ONLY PERIPHERAL VISION TO AID ME; AND AFTER WHAT FELT LIKE SOME WILD OSCILLATIONS I COULDN'T CORRECT FOR; WE SLID SIDEWAYS AND WHEN THE PLANE CAME; HIT THE DIRT; THE R LNDG GEAR RIPPED OFF AND THE WING TO REST ON THE GND; DAMAGING IT. ALTHOUGH LEGALLY CURRENT IN TYPE; I SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT MORE ABOUT ATTEMPTING BACK SEAT OPS. ONE GETS BLASE IN TRICYCLE GEAR PLANES. I GAVE IN TO PRESSURE; MISSED FLYING THE TYPE OF AIRPLANE; FLEW WHEN I'D BEEN EXHAUSTED; RUSHED TO BRAKE SOON FEELING PANICKY AND NOT CORRECTLY USING PERIPHERAL VISION. ALSO I SHOULD HAVE PUT IN FULL STICK FOR THE GUSTS THAT PROBABLY HIT US FROM THE L AND FINALLY; SHOULD HAVE DONE A WHEELS LNDG; SOMETHING NEVER TAUGHT TO ME IN INITIAL TRAINING BUT WHICH I ASKED FOR SOME DUAL IN RECENTLY AND DID THREE. ALSO RWY WAS DAMP-MIGHT HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO SKIDDING.
