A SR22 PILOT DEPARTED FROM A TOWERED AIRPORT WITHOUT TAKEOFF CLEARANCE BECAUSE THE ATIS MESSAGE NOTING THE TOWER CLOSURE WAS INCORRECT AND HIS AIRCRAFT'S RADIO VOLUME WAS TURNED TOO LOW TO HEAR PRE-TAKEOFF RESPONSES TO CTAF AND TRACON AFTER DEPARTING.

A SR22 PILOT DEPARTED FROM A TOWERED AIRPORT WITHOUT TAKEOFF CLEARANCE BECAUSE THE ATIS MESSAGE NOTING THE TOWER CLOSURE WAS INCORRECT AND HIS AIRCRAFT'S RADIO VOLUME WAS TURNED TOO LOW TO HEAR PRE-TAKEOFF RESPONSES TO CTAF AND TRACON AFTER DEPARTING.
Narrative
DURING THE DAY; HAD THE CRAFT SVCED AT LCL ZZZ SVC CTR. PREPARED TO LEAVE JUST BEFORE XA00 PM LCL TIME. AS USUAL; IN THE PLT'S LOUNGE; CONNECTED ON INTERNET TO GET THE WX FOR ZZZ AND THE TRIP TO ZZZ1. THEN PICKED UP ATIS/ASOS FROM CELL PHONE PRIOR TO GOING TO THE PLANE; THE RECORDED MESSAGE SAID THAT THE TWR WAS CLOSED; THE AIRSPACE WAS CHANGED FROM D TO G AND THE TWR WOULD REOPEN IN THE MORNING. IT WAS A VERY DARK NIGHT. AFTER THE PREFLT; GOT ON THE RADIOS TO CHK ATIS; AND THERE WAS NOTHING; IT WAS ALL 'QUIET.' MADE CALLS ON CTAF TO ANNOUNCE LEAVING TRANSIT; GOING TO RUN-UP. THEN AFTER CHKING TFC ON MFD; IT LOOKED LIKE ALL WAS CLR; ANNOUNCED ON CTAF FROM HOLDING SHORT TO TKOF AND DEPARTING L XWIND. (FYI AT BOTH ZZZ2 AND ZZZ1 WHEN TWR IS CLOSED THERE IS NO ATIS WX.) SWITCHED TO APCH; CALLED FOR VFR FLT FOLLOWING AND AFTER A COUPLE TRIES; NOTED THAT THERE WAS NO RESPONSE AND NO 'NOISE' ON THE RADIO. TRIED A COUPLE OTHER FREQ AND REALIZED I WAS 'NO RADIO.' STOPPED TRYING AND NEXT STARTED 'FLYING THE PLANE.' THERE IS A RIDGE TO THE W OF THE ARPT; SO I FOCUSED ON MAKING SURE I WAS GOING TO CLR IT; AFTER BEING DISTR BY THE NON-FUNCTIONING RADIOS. LESSON LEARNED: IT TURNS OUT THE ASOS RECORDING IS FALSE; THE TWR WAS OPEN; I LOOKED UP AT THE TWR DURING THE RUN-UP; SAW THE GREEN/WHITE LIGHT; BUT NOTHING ELSE. AFTER CLRING THE RIDGE; CLEANED UP THE ACFT AND STARTED THE TROUBLESHOOTING; INCLUDING RECYCLING THE RADIOS. TURNED OUT THE SVC CTR HAD BOTH RADIOS 'ON' BUT THE VOLUME TURNED FULL DOWN. SINCE I OWN THE ACFT; AND AM THE ONLY PLT; I MISSED THIS TOTALLY.
