Narrative
CAPT AND F/O UNDERSTOOD WE WERE CLRED TO 10000'. DEP SAID WE WERE ONLY CLRED TO 7000'. THERE WAS ANOTHER ACFT 12-1 O'CLOCK; 4 MI AT 8000'. WE HAD A VISUAL CONTACT WITH HIM AND THOUGHT HE WAS VFR. IT WAS FIRST OR SECOND DAY ON LINE WITH BRAND NEW F/O. F/O HAD BEEN AWAY FROM FLYING FOR 2 YRS. CAPT WAS DOING BOTH HIS AND F/O'S DUTIES. IT WAS ALL F/O COULD DO TO HANDLE CHKLIST. CAPT WAS FLYING. IN THE LTT WORKLOAD IS TOO MUCH FOR 1 PERSON. YOU MUST HAVE 2 QUALIFIED CREWMEMBERS. OUR COMPANY DOES NOT TRAIN NEW F/O THE PROCS OF LINE FLYING. THEY LEAVE IT UP TO THE CAPT'S WHO GET THEM FRESH OUT OF GND SCHOOL. CORRECTIVE ACTION CAME FROM AGS DEP; CLRED US TO 10000' BEST RATE OF CLB. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 82954: F/O WAS FLYING CAPT WAS NON FLYING PLT. SECOND DAY ON LINE WITH NEW F/O. AS THE ACFT WAS APCHING 14000' ASSIGNED BY ATC. CENTER GAVE US A NEW FREQ. F/O REACHED FOR THE RADIO TO DIAL IN NEW FREQ. AT SAME TIME CAPT DID THE SAME. ACFT CLBED THROUGH 14000 TO 14500'. CAPT DISCOVERED ALT BUST AND TOLD F/O TO DESCENDED TO 14000'. F/O WAS NOT DOING HIS JOB FLYING THE ACFT. NEW F/O'S HAVE A TENDENCY TO TRY TO IMPRESS THEIR CAPT BY TRYING TO DO EVERYTHING. IT IS HARD TO IMPRESS UPON THEM THAT THEY ARE NOT IN A SINGLE PLT OPERATION. NEW F/O DO NOT UNDERSTAND 2 PLT FLT OPS.
