CABIN ATTENDANTS WERE NOT SEATED WHEN TURBULENCE ENCOUNTERED.

Narrative

I WAS FLYING FROM RIGHT SEAT; UPGRADING CAPT IN LEFT SEAT. DSNDING THROUGH FL270 IN CLEAR WITH LIGHT CHOP; HEARD RPT OF MDT TURB IN CLOUDS AHEAD. TOLD UPGRADING CAPT TO HAVE F/A'S BE SEATED; SEATBELT SIGN ALREADY ON; AS I SLOWED TO 280 KTS; AND I HEARD HIM MAKE A PAX ANNOUNCEMENT TO THAT EFFECT. AT APPROX 17000' IN CLOUDS WE HIT AN AREA OF MOMENTARY MODERATE TURB AND RAIN WHICH I EXITED IN APPROX 15 SECS WITH A RIGHT TURN. OUR RADAR SHOWED WE WERE IN A CLR AREA BTWN SCATTERED LIGHT RAIN SHOWERS. THE UPGRADING CAPT RPTED; 'SEVERE TURB AND HAIL;' WHICH I FELT WAS AN OVERSTATEMENT AND SHOULD HAVE CHANGED; BUT DIDN'T BECAUSE I WAS BUSY FLYING THE AIRPLANE. HIS RPT WOULD KEEP OTHERS CLR OF THE AREA; AND I FIGURED WE COULD DISCUSS IT LATER. ALSO; WAS RELUCTANT TO SECOND GUESS HIS OPINION IN FRONT OF FAA INSPECTOR ON JUMPSEAT WHO WAS GIVING HIM A CHK. TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE AND BELIEF ALL PAX AND F/A'S WERE SEATED PRIOR TO THE TURB. REMAINDER OF FLT AND LNDG UNEVENTFUL. INSPECTOR LEFT AFTER CORDIAL GOODBYES AND DIDN'T SEEM TO FEEL WE HAD CARELESSLY GOTTEN IN TURB WE SHOULD HAVE SEEN OR ANY OTHER ERRORS. DISCUSSED OCCURRENCE WITH DISPATCHER AFTER LNDG. ALTHOUGH IN MY OPINION TURB WAS MODERATE; DIDN'T EVEN SPILL A CUP OF ICE IN COCKPIT. ASKED MAINT TO INSPECT ACFT AS PRECAUTION SINCE WE RPTED SEVERE ON RADIO. INSPECTION PERFORMED; NO PROB AT ALL FOUND. WAS CALLED BY THE OFFICE 3 HRS LATER. 2 F/A'S SLIGHTLY INJURED. THOUGHT I SAW CAPT OR F/E TELLING THEM ON INTERPHONE AS WELL AS P/A TO BE SEATED; BUT THEY HADN'T. ATTEMPTING NOW TO FIND OUT WHY SOME OF THEM WERE UP WHEN WE HIT THE BUMP. ALSO CURIOUS WHY F/A'S DIDN'T TELL ME AT THE TIME.
