Synopsis
An air carrier crew was commanded to stop while entering MDW Runway 4R after a departure runway change. An aircraft on final executed a go-around.
Narrative
Chicago Midway ATIS stated Midway was taking off and landing Runway 4R. We pushed back from gate. Taxi clearance was to taxi on Yankee; hold short of Papa; expect Runway 13C. While holding short of Papa on Yankee; the First Officer recomputed takeoff data for Runway 13C and we held for a Company aircraft to land and clear Runway 4R at Papa. After the Company aircraft cleared at Papa; Ground told us to taxi. The taxi clearance the First Officer and I both heard was on Papa to cross 4R. My First Officer keyed the mic and said; 'Right on Papa cross 4R.' I started to turn on Papa and had turned about 45 degrees when we received additional Ground direction to stop. The right wingtip had momentarily crossed the hold short line for 4R. Recognizing I was on an active runway; I immediately reversed my taxi back onto Yankee. After maneuvering our aircraft back onto Yankee; we saw a Company aircraft on final to Runway 4R initiating a go-around.Ground then told us to taxi straight ahead on Yankee to Runway 31R and hold short of 4R. As we were taxiing; Ground then cleared us to cross 4R; 4L; left on November; taxi to 13C. The rest of out taxi and flight were uneventful.
Second reporter narrative
We pushed from gate at Chicago Midway. We were told to expect 13C. Neither of us had departed on that runway before. We both looked at the detailed airport page and figured our taxi would be Y P cross 4R and 4L north to 13C. We started and called for taxi uneventful. Our clearance was taxi Y hold short of P. We followed the instructions and Company aircraft exited 4R at P. We saw an aircraft on final and expected to get clearance across 4R at P. Ground gave taxi clearance that I don't remember but I read back; 'Taxi right on P cross 4R.' As I read the instructions back; the Captain began taxiing onto P. I released the mic because I couldn't remember the remaining instructions. I immediately heard Ground say; 'Company # stop; stop; stop.' The Captain made an immediate left turn to avoid the runway hold short line and I believe the right wing swung over the line in the turn. We came to a stop. We observed the aircraft on final go around. Ground gave us clearance to taxi straight on Y; right on 31R hold short 4R. As we began to taxi; Ground gave us clearance to taxi right on 31R cross 4R and 4L left on N taxi to 13C. We followed the instructions and departed Midway on 13C.
