Synopsis
Aircraft X making a Glide Slope out of service approach to Runway 24 at BHM received a GPWS Terrain warning and a Low Altitude Alert from the Tower after descending to MDA.
Narrative
To the best of my recollection I was pilot flying and the Captain was the pilot not flying. We were cleared to SPATT descending to 3;000. Because of the moderate turbulence on the approach I started configuring the airplane early for the LOC Runway 24 approach. Before reaching SPATT we were cleared for the approach; we were green needles; Localizer was armed and autopilot was engaged until we broke out. Once established; I asked for the next altitude 2;700 at HUKEV. Reaching HUKEV I asked to set next altitude 2;200 at LOWGA and at altitude capture I asked to set next altitude. Once we reached LOWGA I asked for vertical speed 1.0 set. Upon breaking out to VMC I noticed the hill in front of the runway about 3 miles in front of us and we were low. A few seconds later Tower informed us. At the same time and we received a GPWS Terrain alert. I informed the Captain that this doesn't look right and we executed a go-around immediately. After we configured we asked Tower if we could try the ILS Runway 6 and we landed uneventfully. I have no explanation why the event occurred except for the winds and turbulence that might have been a factor.
Second reporter narrative
We encountered severe downdraft; with moderate turbulence.
