Synopsis
A Lead Mechanic and Mechanic report about an A321 aircraft that collided into a hangar door. The aircraft had rolled away from a spot the Airbus was positioned on; after being taxied to the hangar. The parking brake was verified set yet chocks were not placed under nose tires or main tires.
Narrative
I pushed an A321 off a gate for reposition to the hangar. Mechanic 'X' was in the left seat; Mechanic 'Y' was in the right seat. I then drove to the hangar. When I arrived at hangar; the aircraft was waiting for me at the hangar for a Stair-truck to placed on it. I pulled up to the aircraft and parked in front of the aircraft; I saw the nose gear parking brake indicator light was on. I got out of the van and walked to the north wall for a stair-truck. As I pulled up to the l1 (Left forward) door; I was guided by Mechanic 'Y' who was in the forward galley of the aircraft.I placed the stair-truck on the aircraft and attempted to put the outriggers down and they did not work. After a short delay I found the truck hydraulic pump switch in the 'off' position. I placed it 'on' and lowered the outriggers. I saw Mechanic 'Y' come down the stairs but did not see where he went. I got back in the van and went back to terminal gate. Mechanic 'Y' observed the aircraft rolling away. [There was] a failure to chock the aircraft.
Second reporter narrative
I was assigned Line Maintenance work on an A321 aircraft. I was required to relocate the aircraft from gate area to hangar Maintenance area. I performed the Taxi duties from Captain's seat. When we arrived at the hangar area; I set parking brakes and performed engine shutdown. The person assigned to put the stair-truck on the aircraft had not arrived from gate area at this time. I proceeded to perform customer service inspection on lavatories on the aircraft while waiting for the stair-truck. When the stair-truck was positioned onto the aircraft; I was in aft part of aircraft. By time I departed the aircraft; said stair-truck person was gone.I proceeded into the hangar area to retrieve parts and tools to continue my jobs at hand. While inside of the hangar; I stopped in the Supervisor's office and talked with the Shift Supervisor and another Mechanic. While in the Supervisor's office; the Shift Supervisor received a call that the aircraft had drifted into the hangar door of the Heavy Maintenance Hangar. Upon arrival to the accident scene; I noticed that an Overhaul Mechanic was onboard.I repositioned the stair-truck back onto the aircraft so he could depart the aircraft. He verified that the Parking brakes were set when he got to the cockpit to shut the APU down. He was onboard while the aircraft moved and collided into the hangar door. Others were involved and an investigation was conducted. Chocks were not installed during stair-truck positioning. Chocks were inadvertently not placed on aircraft at time stair-truck was positioned on aircraft. An inspection of damage was performed by other personnel.Suggest getting visual signal that chocks were installed from person positioning stair-truck to person in cockpit. Person riding brakes give visual check for chocks when leaving aircraft; as safety backup.
