Synopsis

Airbus Flight Crew landing on Runway 8L at ATL reports a runway incursion after being instructed to taxi via Delta; Bravo; Victor; Foxtrot to the ramp. Crew failed to turn on to Bravo and entered 8R at Delta. An EMB170 crew had to reject their takeoff on Runway 8R.

Narrative

After landing on 08L; the Captain slowed the aircraft significantly and we turned right at Taxiway Delta. There was an MD80 that was to our left taxiing to the right that we waited for. There was slight confusion on the Tower Controllers part as to whether they were going to allow us to go ahead of them; but he realized the MD80 was quickly proceeding past us. Our instructions to taxi were; 'Delta; Bravo; Victor'. I repeated 'Delta; Bravo; Victor.' As; we started to move the aircraft forward; I put the instructions DBV in the scratch pad of the MCDU and the Captain verbalized the instructions 'Delta; Bravo; Victor' while proceeding. As I looked up; something didn't look right and I started searching for the taxiway sign for the taxiway we were on to verify we were on Delta; then realized we were about to cross hold bars; and said loudly; 'wow; stop; stop'. As I did so; the Tower Controller said loudly; 'Callsign; stop; stop right there' (pause) 'you were supposed to turn right there at Bravo to Victor'. We answered that we were stopped. We had already stopped the aircraft and the nose rested just beyond the hold bar lines. We were given taxi instructions to cross 08R and switched to ground frequency where they gave us a Tower Controller telephone number to call. The rest of the taxi in was uneventful. The Captain should have verbalized; 'Cleared to cross the runway?' in order to convey what he intended on doing; and in this case; bring to my attention that he didn't really understand the taxi instructions. Normally; when crossing a runway; there is crew verification that we are cleared to do so. In this case; having done that would have alerted me that he wasn't going where we were supposed to be going. Additionally; we had briefed that we were going to use one of the high speed taxiways after landing; and following through with those intentions could have prevented this. In an effort to get clear of the runway; the aircraft was stopped sooner than planned.

Second reporter narrative

First Officer landed the aircraft; I took control at 70 kts and exited runway 8L at Taxiway Delta. Stopped on Delta waiting for taxi instructions. Tower first thought we were on the high speed taxiway B7 east of Delta and instructed us to follow an MD-80 and Taxiway Bravo; Victor; Fox to ramp. After noticing that we were on Delta; not Bravo 7 and actually in front of the MD80; I believe he told them to give way to us. They did not stop and passed by us westbound on Taxiway Bravo. Tower then said; 'okay; taxi Delta; Bravo; Victor;Fox to the ramp.'I did not see Taxiway signs for Taxiway Bravo just Delta in front of me and proceeded straight on Delta instead of making an immediate right turn on Bravo. When Tower and my First Officer noticed my error and told me to stop I stopped the aircraft. Unfortunately the nose gear had already crossed the threshhold of runway 8R.I should have taken the time to cross reference my position with the airport diagram and not get caught up in Atlanta's high speed way to handle aircraft on the ground. There was also no way for me to identify taxiway Bravo visually from the cockpit. Maybe the controllers in ATL could slow down a little bit.
