G1159 flight crew reports climbing to 2;000 FT prior to crossing WENTZ on the RUUDY 2 departure from TEB.
Synopsis
G1159 flight crew reports climbing to 2;000 FT prior to crossing WENTZ on the RUUDY 2 departure from TEB.
Narrative
Our clearance from Teterboro was briefed Teterboro 6 departure off of Runway 01. I went into the FBO to meet and greet the passengers. When I came back to load the bags and the passengers; the SIC (the pilot flying) informed me the new clearance was the RUUDY 2 Departure to PARKE. The airport had turned around. We did a thorough brief which included crossing WENTZ at 1;500 FT. My recollection is that the noise abatement is very much more restrictive off of Runway 24; we spent a lot of time discussing the noise abatement procedure; so as not to ring the bell; which became a distraction. Our company recently received our second warning. I have not been a party to these warnings; however 3 strikes we're out as far a Teterboro goes with a G-III. After takeoff as the pilot not flying; I was busy with my pilot not flying duties; changing frequencies and trying to monitor my first take off with this SIC. After our initial turn in LNAV mode at a heading of 260 degrees; I heard him say now climbing to 2;000 FT. I dialed in 2;000 FT in the altitude selector and realized his and my mistake; we had not reached WENTZ. Before I could utter the words; we must cross WENTZ at 1;500 FT; we were challenged by Departure for vacating 1;500 FT. I take full responsibility; I should have been flying the aircraft and have him acting as pilot not flying. An assertive statement was issued and not headed. We apologized to the Departure Controller; who said 'did you see the heavy'; that had overflown our altitude going to Newark; to which I replied; 'we saw him go by'. I apologized to the Controller; and debriefed the pilot flying (SIC) upon landing about being diligent of the pilot flying; responsibilities.
Second reporter narrative
On take off doing a noise abatement take off we lost situational awareness at 1;500. We were supposed to remain at 1;500 FT until WENTZ then climb to 2;000 but climbed right before crossing WENTZ.
