Synopsis

Two line mechanics reported they did not have enough time before the end of their shift to re-install a hubcap and complete the replacement of the #3 main landing gear (MLG) tire and brake assembly after an overweight inspection of the #3 MLG axle. A write-up was made to reinstall the hubcap on the B767 aircraft. They were informed the next day the #3 brake assembly had disintegrated on taxi due to a missing spacer.

Narrative

I was assigned to a B767 aircraft; to reinstall the #3 main landing gear (MLG) brake and tire. My co-worker and I installed the brake and had Quality Assurance (QA) inspect the installation. QA signed-off on it. Next we installed the main tire. After installing and torqueing the main tire; the tire didn't pass the shake test. We removed the tire and ordered a new main tire. While waiting for the tire; we were asked by Supervision why don't we just use one of the tires that had been removed previously by the A-check [mechanics] that had been done the day before. I stated that shouldn't be done. We were also told that the paperwork for the removal of the MLG brake and tire didn't have to be done because the plane is only going to the hanger. I said that wouldn't be safe. I said that the paperwork is a requirement. It took almost 2.5 hours to receive the new tire from Stores. When the new tire was installed; the tire passed the torque and shake test. QA was there the whole time. When we tried to install the hubcap; the hubcap wouldn't go on properly. My coworker made a Maintenance write-up stating this and I made one stating that the hubcap and hardware is in the cargo compartment.

Second reporter narrative

I was assigned to B767 aircraft to replace the brake and wheel assembly that was removed for inspection of the #3 main landing gear (MLG) axle due to an overweight landing. After denying a recommendation by one of my supervisors to install a used tire; due to the tire on the [inbound] aircraft being unusable due to the failure of the tire seal circlip; and being told by one of the other supervisors that a B767 brake/tire [job] card is not necessary [because] the aircraft [is] 'just going to the hanger'. I made a Maintenance write-up entry describing that we were unable to install the tire anti-skid hub properly. Thus; it remained uninstalled at the end of my shift. I was informed the next day by a coworker that the noted brake assembly disintegrated on taxi due to a missing spacer. I was sure that my coworker and I; along with the Quality Assurance (QA) Inspector; followed the paperwork along with the visual aid correctly.
