Synopsis
The Flight Crew of a Wide Body aircraft on a long range over water flight; declared an emergency; shut down the right engine; dumped fuel and returned to their departure airport when the engine fire warning illuminated shortly after takeoff. CFR crews extinguished landing gear fires and reported numerous blown tires after the aircraft was stopped on the runway.
Narrative
The Captain briefed prior to departure that we would handle any engine malfunction by turning downwind; dumping fuel and landing on Runway XX. Approx one minute after takeoff the right [engine] fire engine fire indications illuminated. The Captain declared an emergency and told ATC we would level at 2000 MSL and fly a downwind to Runway XX. I was flying and leveled at 2000 MSL as the Captain and the Relief Pilot accomplished appropriate checklists. Departure asked if we wanted to land on Runway YY. I kept the configuration at flaps 5/180K in case we would land on Runway YY. The Captain reiterated Runway XX. The Relief Pilot started dumping fuel. The Captain accomplished the before landing checklist and I turned downwind and flew a single engine/20 deg flap visual to Runway XX and landed. The Captain took control of the aircraft after we had stopped on the runway. While stopped the brakes showed high temperatures and some tires deflated as a result. AARF responded and cooled down both gear areas. Passengers were deplaned by air stairs and bussed to terminal. Maintenance took control of the aircraft and we departed on the last bus.
Second reporter narrative
We took off on Runway XX at approximately XA:14 local; weighing a little more than 606;000 pounds. After the fuel control switch was turned off; the light went out in the fire handle and it was pulled but not fired. The Captain declared an 'emergency' and we turned crosswind. I got my QRH out and asked about fuel dump. The Captain directed fuel dump and notified the controller that we were dumping. I backed up the First Officer as he flew; aiding with vectors and approach procedures while the Captain finished the emergency and normal checklists. I notified the Flight Attendants of the problem and advised of time remaining; etc. We set up for a 20 flap; single engine visual backed up by the ILS Runway XX with max autobrake. On final; I secured the fuel dump and our landing weight was approximately 553;000 pounds.
