B737 flight crew experiences right engine compressor stalls at cruise altitude and elects to divert to a suitable airport. The engine continues to operate during descent and approach; then seizes on short final. Normal landing ensues.
Narrative
During cruise; the right engine had a compressor stall. We then descended to a lower altitude. The engine appeared to operate normally during the descent and level-off. Shortly after level-off; the right engine had another compressor stall. I made a decision to divert. I declared an emergency and asked for the men and equipment to standby for our arrival. The First Officer and I discussed our options and possibilities. The flight attendants and passengers were briefed about the situation and the company was notified. The engine appeared to operate normally during the descent and approach; but on short final the right engine seized. We continued the landing and stopped on the runway. The Fire Department conducted an immediate inspection. They informed us that no fire; smoke; or fluids were coming from the right engine and our brake temperature was not hot. I made a PA to the passengers explaining our situation and asked them to remain seated until we get to the gate. We then taxied to the gate and deplaned normally.
Second reporter narrative
At cruise level-off; [we] felt what was later confirmed as a compressor stall of right engine. A few minutes later a second compressor stall occurred. [We] immediately started a descent. Both engines appeared normal; but divert was prudent. [We] declared emergency and requested CFR. On short final; [the] right engine failed. Normal single engine landing [was] made.
