Narrative
WAS ON IFR FLT FROM MYF IN SAN DIEGO TO LAX. ASSIGNED RWY 25L. GIVEN RADAR VECTORS TO INTERCEPT LOC AT 3500' MSL. CONDITIONS WERE BASES 1500'; TOPS 3500'. DID SO AND LOC NEEDLE STAYED 'TOO CENTERED FOR TOO LONG.' THEREFORE; TAPPED OBS AND GOT A FULL RIGHT DEFLECTION. IMMEDIATELY BEGAN TURN TO RIGHT AND SET #2 NAV TO LOC FREQ AS A BACKUP. OVERSHOT COURSE AND FOUND MYSELF APPARENTLY N OF COURSE; WITH CONFLICTING NEEDLES BTWN #1 AND #2 NAVS. APCH ADVISED ME FIRST THAT I WAS S OF COURSE; THEN LATER THAT I WAS N OF COURSE. EVENTUALLY; UPON ENCOUNTERING VMC; CORRECTED TO S AND MADE AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG ON 25L. TELEPHONED LA APCH AND SPOKE TO A VERY COURTEOUS BUT CONCERNED SUPVR WHO TOLD ME WHAT THEY HAD SEEN ON THEIR RADAR SCREEN. ON RETURN TRIP; NO PROBS WITH NAVS IN VFR CONDITIONS. CHKED ILS MYF AND NO PROB WITH EITHER NAV. WILL CONSIDER PURCHASING NEW RADIOS AS THESE ARE OLD AND HAVE REQUIRED BENCH TESTING IN PAST. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING. RPTR WAS INSTRUCTED TO CALL TRACON AFTER LNDG. THEY SAID THAT THERE HAD BEEN NO CONFLICTS; ADDING THAT IF THERE HAD; THE PHONE CALL WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE THAN A POLITE CHAT. RPTR IS HAVING ALL NEW RADIOS INSTALLED AT TIME OF CALLBACK.
