Synopsis

The pilot of a high wing aircraft taxiied onto CKZ Runway 26 after the appropriate radio alerts on CTAF and saw another aircraft on short final; but was able to clear the runway to mitigate the conflict.

Narrative

Let me first review the layout and normal operating procedures for CKZ Runway 8/26; 4;215 FT long. The runway side of 26 borders the parking ramp with access from the ramp and a narrow older taxiway from the ramp to the threshold of 26; normal operation for larger aircraft (too large for the taxiway) is to back taxi out on the runway to the threshold of 26. Before pulling onto the runway I made my standard radio call; 'Aircraft will be back taxiing on runway for takeoff 26.' I looked down the runway in both directions and double checked the 26 side before pulling onto the runway to back-taxi. On the runway I saw a bi-plane turning short final. I also made a radio call twice; 'Aircraft on final at Pennridge; there is an aircraft on the runway.' No response was received. At this point I maneuvered the aircraft across the runway and onto the narrow taxiway. The bi-plane continued and completed his landing. My aircraft is a high wing aircraft and has the potential to block vision. Trees on the Runway 26 end may have hidden the other aircraft from view. I did leave myself an out by using the old taxiway (narrow). I am also aware of the bi-plane's blind spot over the nose during final approach. I found out that the other pilot stopped on the ramp and told the Lineman he was not radio equipped.
