Synopsis

The pilot of a TBM 850 learned well after the fact that the on board ETM [Engine Trend Monitor] had recorded a Vne exceedence; as required by the manual; during a previous test flight performed under his command. The reporter was not a trained test pilot.

Narrative

Much is Unknown about this event. The Shadin ETM installed in the aircraft recorded a VNE exceedence. VNE; per the Approved Flight Manual is 266 KIAS. The Shadin System recorded that 266 KIAS was exceeded for 14 seconds; and the maximum speed was 278 KIAS.The aircraft Manufacturer has an eleven page checklist contained in the Maintenance Manual outlining the items required for the test flight. It is a required sign-off following a 600 hour or Annual Inspection.Pilots performing the required test flights are not graduates of any test pilot school or program that I am aware of. Additionally; I am not aware of their having received any training from the manufacturer on any specific process or procedures for conducting this flight test.I know of no other manufacturer that allows; or requires a test flight (by an untrained individual) where a requirement is to exceed a published limitation. My impression is that this checklist was originally intended to be applied to some other event or requirement; possibly performed by a Factory Production Test Pilot.I believe the process creates liability for both Socata and the Service Center returning the aircraft to service for the customer.
