A twin-engine aircraft crashed into a mountain slope during poor weather, resulting in eight fatalities and one survivor.

What happened

During a flight through severe weather conditions, a twin engine airplane collided with the terrain on the slope of Mt Svetlam Duh, situated within the Rila Mountain Range. The impact occurred while the aircraft was in the cruise phase of its flight.

Search efforts located the wreckage approximately one day after the incident. Among the occupants of the aircraft, there were eight fatalities and one individual who sustained injuries but was successfully evacuated from the site.

Findings

Official investigations into the crash identified that the accident was primarily driven by an error made by Air Traffic Control (ATC).

Probable cause

An error by air traffic controllers led to the aircraft striking the mountain slope.
