What happened
During a local training mission operating out of Fāyid AFB, two aircraft were involved in a fatal mid-air collision. The primary aircraft was conducting a flight with ten people on board, including several cadets who were visiting the area. This flight was intended to simulate a coordinated attack alongside a second aircraft, a Vampire registered VZ188, which was operated by a single pilot.
While both planes were maintaining a low-altitude cruise, they collided in mid-air. Following the impact, both the Vampire and the larger training aircraft descended rapidly into the terrain. The wreckage was located approximately 11 miles northeast of the Fāyid airbase. The accident resulted in 11 fatalities, accounting for every individual on board both aircraft.
Findings
- The collision occurred while the aircraft were operating at a low altitude during a simulated combat maneuver.
- The mid-air impact between the two aircraft led to the immediate loss of control and subsequent crash.
