Synopsis
CRJ-700 Captain reported a Generator 2 failure during cruise; proceeded to complete QRH procedures which provided APU electrical power; and safely landed at destination.
Narrative
While at cruise; we had a Hydraulic 3 Low Press come on to the CAS. I check the hydraulic page and saw Hydraulic 3 was unpressurized and transferred the plane and the radios to the FO (First Officer) while I grabbed the QRH. Noting the CAS messages; I checked the electrical page and saw AC BUS 2 was unpowered with no message. With no CAS message displaying for the AC Bus 2 and it not being in the non-messages QRH list; I ran the AC Bus 2 QRH since that seemed to be the issue affecting the other systems. I also told my FO to descend us to below FL370 so we could get the APU running. The AC BUS 2 QRH called for GEN with switch off; reset; then auto; which I did. We restored power to AC BUS 2 and got a GEN 2 Off amber message which has a QRH of its own; which I ran since we had a corresponding CAS message and both QRH procedures led to the same steps - which was to turn GEN 2 switch to off; reset; and leave it there and start the APU if available and below FL370. Which; was something I had already put in the works after seeing the electrical page. After that we had a Right Windshield Heat amber message; which was part of losing AC Bus 2 and QRH-driven reset of the Right Windshield Heat switch. We had an intermittent APU fault white status message the rest of the flight; which I ran the QRH for and was mainly a loss of redundancy of certain APU systems but we were getting power from the APU so I was OK with that. After running the QRHs; [I] discussed what just happened with the FO to make sure I had covered everything that had just happened and didn't miss anything; and that there was nothing he saw that concerned him. I sent a ACARS message to Dispatch / Maintenance; and called the FA (Flight Attendant) to see if they had noticed anything. They informed me that the cabin light had flickered; which we had the same thing in the cockpit before we got the first CAS message and that everything was normal in the cabin. We got to the gate and I called Maintenance Control and wrote up the Gen 2 fail inflight; and APU fault messages. I discussed the Right Windshield Heat message and Maintenance Control said that was a side effect of AC BUS 2 failing and since it reset with the switch; they said to not write that up; which confirmed my thoughts on that message being a side effect of AC BUS 2.
