Synopsis
CRJ-700 Captain reported smoke in the flight deck and cabin with loss of power from the left engine while turning onto final approach. A safe landing was accomplished. After the aircraft was stopped the Fire Marshall reported there was no fire or smoke.
Narrative
Coming through 10k we felt a slight jolt and thought maybe it was from all of the turbulence we were experiencing throughout our flight. There was no indication from the flight deck to suggest otherwise. On a right downwind and after being cleared for the visual to XR into ZZZ1 we started configuring the aircraft for landing. Abeam the final approach fix I started turning a right base at FL024 and 180kts. On our base to final turn we felt a severe vibration followed by a complete loss of power on the left engine. We immediately smelled smoke dark cockpit with no visual' I also noticed that N1 on the left engine was dashing on and off and the airplane began to yaw left. I clicked off the auto pilot and began hand flying. At this point we quickly [requested priority landing] and I had my First Officer (FO) call the aft Flight Attendant (FA) to verify smoke was in the cabin. She confirmed there was a strong smell of smoke. At this point we were inside the final approach fix and we thought we may have a fire situation. My call was made to continue landing. Our training kicked in and we knew a flap 20 landing was required and since we had a 10k foot runway I decided to continue to land and would fight the possible fire on the ground. After we landed; stopping on the runway; and parking was set I called the FA's to see if there was still a presence of smoke. She said no and at this point I advised the pax to remain seated. We had the fire trucks visual check for a fire and they reported no fire or smoke. I decided an evacuation was not necessary so we proceeded to the gate without any further incident."
