Synopsis
CRJ700 Captain reported the aileron trim and the rudder trim were not operating correctly and returned to departure airport.
Narrative
After takeoff on the climb out around 5;500 ft.; I started to notice the aircraft was flying rather crooked; and the aileron trim and the rudder trim was both in further setting than I had set; they were both almost half way to the left; and as I tried to set them to return back to neutral the trims continued left and eventually were full left on both the aileron and rudder trim. At this point around 7;000 ft.; I disconnected the Autopilot and started to add manual inputs to correct the excessive trim settings; started to level off and told the First Officer (FO) to advise ATC we want to return to ZZZ; after that was done I took the radios from him and told him to send an ACARS message to Dispatch to advice of return to field; as well as work the items with the flight attendants (FA's); and get me landing numbers; after he had accomplished all that I gave the radios back to the FO and continued to hand fly and we came back to ZZZ and landed on Runway XX; keeping in mind that we were going to have an overweight landing. We landed safely with within standard; soft landing and once we were off the runway we safely taxied to the gate; safely deplaned the pax and started rest of the process of speaking with Maintenance; Dispatch; and Chief Pilot.
