Synopsis
A320 Captain reported a dirty socks odor during arrival taxi. After conferring with Dispatch and Maintenance; two engine engine runs were completed and APU was placed on MEL.
Narrative
Dirty socks smell throughout aircraft during taxi in ZZZZ coinciding with selection of APU bleed air. Flight Attendants noticed it right away and described it as intensifying. I didn't find out about their experience till opening the cockpit door and asking them. I asked because at shutdown I noticed the smell in the cockpit. I selected APU bleed off and the smell began to subside. In the aft cabin the smell was described as stronger on the right side than the left. This is a repeat malfunction for this aircraft. Two other instances were in the logbooks I had available; one on Date; another on Date 1. Two flight attendants reported headaches that subsided after thirty plus minutes. Flight Crew Operations Manual 1 odor procedure was followed. FOM was referenced. Logbook and odor reporting form completed. Maintenance Control requested a dual engine run which contract Maintenance could not do so the First Officer and I did a ten minute run with both packs on while using oxygen; the Maintenance Technician did not use oxygen. We both noticed the smell coming from our forward vents after engine shutdown when we took off the masks. Two Flight Attendants entered the aircraft and immediately noticed the smell; one got a sore throat. They left and the other two entered and immediately noticed the smell. A second engine run was requested and accomplished; this time for 15 minutes with the temperature selectors in full hot. We wore oxygen masks; the Maintenance Technician did not. This time the smell was not encountered after the engine run. APU was placed on MEL.
