CRJ-900 Captain reported encountering wake turbulence departing DTW in trail of an A320.
Synopsis
CRJ-900 Captain reported encountering wake turbulence departing DTW in trail of an A320.
Narrative
Due to airport operations and runway closures; DTW was only using Runway 03L for takeoff; [Runway] 04L/R for landing. There was a line of 10 to 15 planes constantly lined up on both sides of the runway ready for takeoff. When we were cleared for takeoff; I noticed the traffic ahead of us; an A320; was just lifting off the runway. I don't know the exact time that traffic was ahead of us; but my guess is around 1 to 2 minutes.Shortly after rotation; we encountered wake turbulence from the Airbus ahead; causing our plane to bank to 10 degrees of bank to the left followed by a few degrees to the right. It took about half deflection of aileron control to both sides to try to maintain runway heading. I continued hand flying until 5000 ft. MSL to ensure we would not be surprised again. No navigation deviation occurred. Speed deviations were less than 5 kts. We informed Tower of our wake encounter before changing to Departure.Surface winds were reported calm at the time of the encounter. Looking back; I should have requested a longer separation to avoid the possibility of wake turbulence.Cause [was] calm winds and possible reduced separation from traffic ahead.
