Synopsis
An air carrier flight crew reported a complete loss of hydraulic fluid resulted in discontinuing the approach; a manual gear extension for a successful landing.
Narrative
Leg was operating ZZZ1-ZZZ. Upon turning onto the final approach course at 3;000 ft. for Runway XXR at ZZZ we experienced a HYD 3 LOW PRESS caution message. For a couple moments the message flickered on and off; eventually staying on permanently. I was pilot flying and immediately asked the Captain to tell ATC we were discontinuing the approach. The Approach Controller gave us a right turn off the final course and boxed us around with vectors until we were ready to come in. I called for the QRH for the appropriate message; the Captain began to read the QRH; and I took the radios from him. While he was completing the QRH I began to communicate to dispatch and maintenance control the nature of the issue. During the completion of the QRH we slowed; performed a manual gear extension; and went to flaps 20 to prepare for landing.Once the Captain completed the QRH he informed the Flight Attendants and passengers of what was going on he also took the radios back from me and informed ATC that; due to the issue; we would be unable to get off the runway upon stopping and would need a tow off. We then made sure we were ready; re set up the FMS with the new Ref speeds; and re ran the before landing checklist. I then landed the aircraft with a flaps 20 landing as per the QRH and we stopped and shut the engines down on Runway XXR. After making the airplane ready for tow we were then towed by ground crew back to our gate. Cause: Leak in the Hydraulic 3 system resulted in a complete loss of fluid.
Second reporter narrative
Hydro 3 failure. Cause: Hydraulic seal failure on system 3. Caused all of the fluid to leak out.
