Synopsis

Air carrier flight crew reported arcing and cracking in the cockpit windshield and elected to divert to the nearest airport.

Narrative

In cruise just over ZZZ the Captian (PF) notices a spark crossing the front windshield. We determined it to be an arch in the windshield. We decided to run the QRH for Windshield Damage. As I PM got out the QRH and proceeded to run Window Damage. While running the QRH the spark" reached the other side of the windscreen and there was a loud "POP." While running the QRH; we got to Step 2 which we could determine we were not losing pressurization but could not definitively tell if the window was deformed or not (after the pop a big crack like a baseball or rock hit the window in one spot which made it so we could not definitively determine if the window was deformed or not). We had a Company jump seating 777 CA in the back whom we decided to get his opinion on it as well. Since we were not able to determine if it was deformed or not we decided to go the conservative route and say it was deformed. This lead to "land at nearest suitable airport" we finished up the QRH. I sent dispatch a message letting them know the issue and that we were looking at ZZZ1 and ZZZ as airports. We got the weather for ZZZ1 and ZZZ. We discussed our options and while discussing the arching started again. At this point we made the determination based on weather; terrain; and distance that ZZZ would be the nearest suitable Airport. We [requested priority handling] and notified ATC and dispatch of our intentions and proceeded to divert into ZZZ. We landed and taxied to the gate with out any further issues."
