Synopsis

CRJ-700 Captain reported safely diverting to an alternate airport after receiving a HYD 1 Low Pressure EICAS message.

Narrative

While descending into ZZZ at FL280 we received a HYD 1 Low Pressure EICAS Caution. Given the nature of the underlying mechanical abnormality; we determined that weather at ZZZ was reported as less than ideal based on reports of extreme precipitation overhead ZZZ. Based upon the aforementioned report; we quickly concluded a diversion to ZZZ1 was the safest and most prudent course of action. The better weather at ZZZ1 and ample airport resources given the enhanced constraints posed by the hydraulic system abnormalities made our decision easy. QRH and standard company non-normal polices were satisfactorily adhered to during the diversion and subsequent landing. Everything airborne went really well. Post-landing and quite understandably; the station in ZZZ1 was surprised by the nature of our diversion and required light explanation in order to adequately convey we were more than simply a 'gas-and-go' diversion and required more dedicated station services to deplane passengers by jet bridge notwithstanding maintenance support. No other suggestions for improvement aside from that.
