Air carrier flight crew flying A320 aircraft reported cabin door malfunction inflight. Diverted and landed uneventfully.
Synopsis
Air carrier flight crew flying A320 aircraft reported cabin door malfunction inflight. Diverted and landed uneventfully.
Narrative
Cleared to T/O on Rwy XX from ZZZ and while waiting for engine spool up; FA1 called the CA to note an exit light flicker on and off. FO pulled power and cancelled T/O with ZZZ Tower. CA confirmed the light was off with FA1 and obtained T/O clearance from Tower. T/O was uneventful until FA1 called again during cleanup following Climb power setting. FA1 advised CA that the 1R door pressurization light was blinking red. FO continued flying and assumed radio duties while CA continued to obtain info from FA1. CA decided to return to ZZZ due to door issue. CA called dispatch and Maintenance Control to discuss options and whether to conduct an overweight landing or burn fuel. After completing a landing assessment and finding the current conditions prohibited a landing option at ZZZ; CA decided to divert to ZZZ1 to avoid weather in the area. Due to runway closures at ZZZ1; CA determined that ZZZ2 was the closest suitable diversion airport. After [requesting priority handling] and taking vectors from ATC to burn down to a suitable landing weight; the FO landed at ZZZ2 without incident.Cause: Future situations like this event that arise while on the runway will result in exiting the runway and waiting on a taxiway to gather more data to confirm that no other issues are present before taking the runway again to depart.
Second reporter narrative
Upon taking the runway for takeoff; FA1 called the flightdeck and said exit lights came on. We stopped the aircraft on the runway and informed the tower that we needed to delay. There were no other associated lights in the flightdeck or in the cabin; and after talking with Person A; and the FO; I continued the takeoff.Reaching 2500 feet MSL; the FA1 informed me that the R1 door red light was flashing at times. It would flash and at periods stop flashing. We leveled the aircraft and informed ATC that we might have a pressurization issue and requested to stay close to ZZZ airport. The FO flew and I began communicating with the FA's and passengers. Afterwards; I called dispatch and maintenance to discuss options. The aircraft did not have a pressurization issue; but decided to divert to ZZZ2 and declared a pan pan. The aircraft continued pressurizing for the entire flight. I informed the crew and passengers that we have an issue with one of our cabin doors; but the aircraft was safe. Also informed the passengers that we are not able to continue to ZZZ3 with the condition of the cabin door and we would be headed to ZZZ2 and that I would keep them informed along the way. We climbed to 6000 feet MSL enroute to ZZZ2. We held for an additional 20-25 minutes to burn fuel in order to land below max landing weight and decided to descend to 4000 feet MSL to burn more fuel as we were holding outside of ZZZ2. The FO continued flying and executed the ILS YY at ZZZ2. Upon landing. I taxied to the gate and shutdown with the safety vehicles standing by.Cause: I will not takeoff with any exit or cabin lights that illuminate. It could be associated with an electrical or pressurization issue. And depart the runway and make the decision on the taxiway to allow more time for decision making
