Synopsis

Air carrier Captain reported hydroplaning on the runway during landing and using thrust reversers to a complete stop to prevent a wet runway overrun.

Narrative

The First Officer was pilot flying on a normal landing in ZZZZ on runway XX. There was about a 3 knot tailwind and the far end of the runway was wet. The landing was normal with medium autobrake set as per the landing data. All was normal until we transferred control. The first officer said it felt like the breaking action was reduced (or words to that effect) just as I took over control. We had proceeded to the last third of the runway where it was considerably wetter than the touchdown and rollout area. When I applied the brakes; I could feel the aircraft was not decelerating. I took a quick look at the triple brake pressure indicator in case the brakes had failed; but the indicator showed good brake pressure so I realize we were hydroplaning. I put the aircraft thrust back into full reverse to prevent a runway overrun. We did stop just in time to make our turn into the taxiway at the end of runway XX without blocking the traffic that was already there waiting to back taxi. I had to leave reverse in place until nearly at a stop to ensure a safe stop. I did not see any limitations exceeded but felt I should submit this report just in case. Following our landing; ATC turned the airport around.
