CRJ-900 Captain reported encountering wake turbulence in trail of another air carrier on approach to JFK.
Synopsis
CRJ-900 Captain reported encountering wake turbulence in trail of another air carrier on approach to JFK.
Narrative
While on approach to 4L; we encountered wake turbulence from a heavy on approach on 4R. We were approximately 1500 feet with the autopilot on when we started to bank to the right. I realized that this was not a correction to the localizer; so I disconnected the autopilot to bank to the left. I went full left aileron and had no control. At this point I added power and put the nose down. I continued to try and add left aileron. I was able to correct the aircraft back to the left to straight and level. We were still on glideslope and on the localizer so we continued to landing. We were visual so I asked for slight left deviation of the localizer to ensure no more wake was encountered.Cause: Encountered wake turbulence while on approach to 4L. Winds were 100 at 17 gusting to 27. As a result; the wind blew wake turbulence from a heavy just ahead of us on approach for 4R towards our final approach course.I should've known that with the winds the approach from the 4R approach might blow into the 4L path. When the event occurred; I was looking outside and could see the turbulence/wake from the heavy.
NASA callback
Reporter stated the encounter was not extreme; and was easily corrected.
