Synopsis

Air Carrier flight crew reported Landing Gear malfunction and return to departure airport.

Narrative

Initial takeoff rejected immediately after centering up for takeoff after APU door open message came on. Exited runway; cycled APU and door open cleared and stayed clear. Proceeded to takeoff again after being cleared . Second takeoff was normal until we got to flap retraction altitude and called for gear up We received a gear disagree cas message and audible gear disagree. I continued the departure and leveled off at the appropriate 5000 feet in the climb I called for QRC and QRH and took over radio control as well as maintaining flying duties. We contacted departure and advised of the situation and asked for vectors while we ran checklist and formulated a plan. We completed the gear disagree checklist and the message was removed and did not return. We also had 3 gear down indications. We informed passengers and crew of plan and situation. We decided to return to the field as advised by the checklist. I did not want to [request priority handling] as we had normal indications but the copilot said they would be more comfortable [requesting priority handling] so I did so. We were in constant communications with approach while we were vectored to burn off fuel. We then did a low approach to get visual confirmation of gear extension by the tower; after confirmation we came back around for a visual approach to the longest runway XXL and had a normal uneventful landing and taxied back to the gate.

Second reporter narrative

Taxied out of; Taxiway 1 in ZZZ after starting second engine with a delayed engine start; checking electrics and securing the APU; we received a caution message of 'APU Door Open.' We cycled the PWR/fuel switch. The message did not occur; we were cleared to take off. As soon as we lined up The message came back. We canceled our takeoff clearance and taxied clear. We ran the QRH which was designed for in the air and it was not relevant. The message cleared after restarting and stopping APU. We told tower we were ready for Takeoff. Normal takeoff but as soon as the captain who was PF called for Gear up Speed mode; as the gear came up we got the Warning message; 'Gear Disagree'. Out of 1000 feet AGL we turn the auto pilot on Captain radio and flying airplane and I ran to QC. There was no QC for the disagree checklist. So we continued with the Captain flying and doing radios while I ran the QRH. We lowered the gear as per the checklist and the gear disagree. Warning went away. The checklist said he landed the nearest suitable airport and as we were only out of 4000 feet at this point; we decided to head back to ZZZ. We contacted dispatch via ACARS. Informed the flight attendants and passengers; ran the fuel numbers and decided that we needed to burn some fuel about 3000 pounds prior to landing. We got vectors over the ZZZ area while we coordinated with air traffic control and set up to land for runway XXL. Once we have burn enough fuel to not have an overweight landing we got back in for a low approach just to confirm with ATC that all the gear were down and locked. Which they confirmed. we overflew runway XX left at 2000 feet. We got vectored in for the visual for runway XX left landed without any incident taxi to the Gate and deplaned."
