CRJ-200 Captain reported encountering turbulence; possibly related to wake; departing IAH.
Synopsis
CRJ-200 Captain reported encountering turbulence; possibly related to wake; departing IAH.
Narrative
This is to clarify an event in which ATC was advised that we encountered severe turbulence; when in fact the turbulence experienced was moderate.During the climb out; around 7;000 feet; we encountered brief wake-like turbulence. The wings rolled left and right; but the First Officer maintained positive control at all times and promptly returned the aircraft to level flight. There was no significant change in pitch or airspeed; no items dislodged; and only light to moderate pressure against seat belts. The momentary rolling motion startled me; I keyed the mic and reported moderate to severe turbulence" to ATC. Upon later reflection; I recognized that the turbulence was moderate and the 'severe' portion of the call was an overstatement made in the moment out of an abundance of caution. The rest of the flight continued without issue. When I finished the trip; it stood out to me that the way I phrased the turbulence report to ATC was not the most accurate description of what we had experienced. I reviewed the definition of turbulence in the FOM to ensure compliance with the FARs and company policy. Based on that review; I confirmed that what we experienced was in fact moderate turbulence; not severe turbulence as previously reported."
