Synopsis
A320 Captain reported receiving an ECAM for Engine 1 Compressor Vane during takeoff roll. Flight crew rejected takeoff and returned to the gate.
Narrative
During takeoff and Thrust at Flex setting speeding up to 50 knots and non flying FO pilot calling airspeed alive we received an ECAM for Engine 1 COMPRESSOR VANE. I slightly adjusted Thrust levers to see if message would disappear since no engine indications of EPR; EGT; N2 or any sounds were abnormal that we could tell. Message persisted and I decided to reject the takeoff at about 50 knots on the runway. I stopped the aircraft on the runway while FO called the Tower that we were rejecting the takeoff. I applied the Parking Brake and announced CABIN CREW AT STATIONS on the PA. NO QRC actions were required and FO proceeded with ECAM Actions that resulted in shutting down Engine Number 1 on the ground. After ECAM was completed; I announced on the PA to crew members to STAY SEATED and also quickly explain to the customers what happened and that we were taxing back to gate for Maintenance and change of aircraft. We referenced the QRH and then contacted Maintenance control through ACARS and also informed the Station that we were coming back to the gate. Maintenance logbook was written up with the discrepancy. In addition; a commuting Captain in the back in [seat] XX heard some abnormal noises from engine 1 during the takeoff.
