Synopsis

A-320 air carrier crew reported an engine compressor stall during cruise flight prior to descent on a training flight. The crew shutdown the engine and landed at the destination.

Narrative

Aircraft was dispatched with FADEC class 2 message. (For info only. Possibly unrelated). The flight was uneventful until about 13 minutes before top of descent; position approximately 70nm east of ZZZ. We received ECAM caution msg ENG 2 compressor vane; EGT was higher than engine 1 but still in normal margins. Only ECAM action was 'avoid thrust changes'. The speed mode was switched from managed to selected to avoid thrust changes.Dispatch and Maintenance Control were notified via ACARS.13-15 minutes later ATC issued descent clearance. Aircraft started descent; maintaining the same thrust settings and accepting the increase in speed.During the descent the thrust was later gradually and manually reduced to an intermediate setting and engines continued to function normally. As the power reduction continued and slightly above idle; bangs and vibration was felt and associated ENG 2 STALL ECAM with the EGT increasing into the RED. The engine was idled ; ECAM accomplished and engine was shut down per SOP.As the EGT had exceeded the normal parameter with the highest we observed to be 757; we determined that constitutes severe engine damage; therefore agent 1 was discharged per the ECAM. [Priority handling was requested] with ZZZ Center and a lower altitude was requested. Initially 16;000 was issued; but avoiding the need for level segments with the good engine at full thrust trying to maintain altitude just below the 1 engine out ceiling (141;000 lbs with anti ice on); we requested 10;000 which was granted as requested.Flight Attendants (FA) where given a briefing and a PA was also made to the passengers as the bangs and vibration as well as the power xfr were all observed in the cabin.Dispatch was informed of the [situation] and shut down via ACARS.Upon checking with ZZZ Approach; we were given vectors for Runway XX. We declined Runway XX and requested Runway XYR as it was longer. Another brief was given to the FAs.ATC wanted to put us on a visual approach; however a request for the ILS which was granted. The aircraft was configured on profile; and all stabilized approach criteria were met.Landing in TDZ on centerline utilizing MED brakes and only engine 1 reverse. Aircraft came to a complete stop on the runway and parking brake was set.Communication with Rescue and Firefighting (RFF)/Crash Fire Rescue (CFR) services established on ground frequency. An inspection by RFF/CFR services revealed no anomalies on the exterior and brake temps to be good. All ground equipment was confirmed clear of the aircraft.PAs completed keeping passengers updated of the event.Aircraft exited runway at its own power and taxied to the gate with normal passengers disembarkation via jet way.Cabin crew debriefed.Post flight pilot debriefing completed.Dispatch and chief pilot contacted and debriefed.

Second reporter narrative

Pilot monitoring (PM) in left seat for Captain IOE; Engine 2 shut down. Aircraft Dispatched with CLASS 2 FADEC status message. During cruise at FL300 received ECAM caution msg ENG 2 Compressor vane at time XA:33. Engine indications were normal. The ECAM directed to avoid rapid thrust changes. Referenced checklist. ECAM action completed. Dispatch and Maintenance Control informed via ACARS.For descent; as power smoothly reduced toward idle; a loud bang and a chugging was heard and felt. At XA:50 ECAM ENG 2 STALL. The engine was idled per ECAM action. EGT continued to rise. Aircraft and radios given to right seat pilot flying (PF). Left seat PM completed ECAM actions.EGT OVERLIMITEngine 2 was shut down per ECAM and FIRE P/B pressed and AGENT 1 discharged. [Requested priority handling]. Lower altitude requested. Flight attendants called up after generator loss led to the in flight entertainment screens turning off. A quick test brief was given about the engine failure and I told them I would call back with more info. After completing all ECAM directions; discussing a plan and referencing the checklist; another call was made to all flight attendants to further discuss the briefing; evacuation was not planned. An announcement was then made to the passengers that due to a mechanical malfunction we had to shut down the right engine; we were capable of continuing flying safely; that fire trucks would look over the aircraft upon landing and we would plan to taxi into the gate. Then sent a message to Dispatch the engine 2 failed; [priority handling] and landing at ZZZ.Runway XX was offered by ATC. Declined as we wanted the longer runway. Requested vectors for ILS XYR. Uneventful approach and landing. Stopped on the runway to be inspected by crash fire rescue equipment and all clear received. Passengers were informed that the fire department looked over the aircraft and we were safe to taxi to the gate. Taxied at own power to the gate with normal disembarkation.
