Synopsis
Air carrier Captain reported the First Officer was flying the approach when on short final the aircraft was hit by a strong updraft. The aircraft lost air speed; the stick shaker activated; sink rate was heard and a hard landing ensued.
Narrative
We were doing a routine flight from ZZZ1 to ZZZ. Taxi out; take off; cruise; and descent were all uneventful. We were cleared for the visual XXL into ZZZ and the approach was flown to standards and stable by 1000 feet. I was the PM and the FO was the PF. On short final we hit a strong updraft and the FO did not correct immediately and leveled off momentarily while pulling out some power. To counter the speed increase at the end of the performance gain he continued to pitch down but never brought in enough power. By the time I called speed" he was already in the flare and the trend was increasing down. Right before touchdown we got a "sink rate" and stick shaker for a half a second before the mains touched down very hard. The landing rollout and taxi in was uneventful but due to not knowing the FPM I wrote it up and called MX (Maintenance).Cause: The cause of this was improper technique to correct for a updraft and performance gain.Suggestions: Next time I should have called a go around when I saw we were slightly high on short final rather than thinking we would correct immediately and save the landing. Obviously hindsight is 20-20 and I wasn't aware that it was going to be a hard landing until we were in the flare"
