Synopsis
B757 flight crew reported a panel on the right engine pylon separated during landing; causing damage to the engine and reverser. Flight crew had difficulty slowing due to reverser not working properly.
Narrative
We were dispatched ZZZ1-ZZZ in aircraft X. I was giving first leg of FO OE and the trainee was the PF. We arrived at ZZZ with out incident but there was significant weather in the area; including cells on final to runway XXL; which was the runway in use for landing. Approach control told us to expect RNAV to runway XY; a XXXX foot runway. We set up for the approach and discussed the unimportance of using max thrust reverse followed by a smooth application of manual braking; due to the lack of auto brakes. The landing was normal; but when the PF tried to deploy the reverser ( both handles at once) they would not deploy. I know now that the right reverser had been damaged. The aircraft did not significantly decelerate because he was fighting with the reversers and never applied the brakes. I took control of the jet and applied max manual raking. We were able too slow down and take the final exit at the end of the runway. When we got to the gate; a FA told us that a passenger had seen and panel come off the right engine on landing. We went outside to look and a panel on the inboard side of the right engine. pylon was missing. We called contract maintenance and Maintenance Control and; ultimately; they found the the panel had caused significant damage to parts of the engine; including the reverser.
Second reporter narrative
During landing all indications were normal and a perfectly normal landing according to the Check Pilot. Thru reversers were difficult to deploy and that was announced during deceleration. Autobreaks were MEL'd; so manual breaking was used to bring the aircraft to a safe stop. The landing and deceleration were normal we didn't notice anything about the panel or abnormal indications.Upon arrival at the gate the flight attendant advised that a passenger had reported a loose/ missing panel . Post flight inspection confirmed PANEL ON INBOARD PYLON OF RT ENGINE missing the captain notified maintenance and filed a report .
